JUSTICES’ ASSN.

QUARTERLY MEETING-

q’he quarterly meeting and luncheon of the West Coast Justices of the Peace Association was held at Harker’s this afternoon, there being a large attendance, from all parts of the district. Numerous apologies for absence were received. Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., presided. The Chairman, in opening the meeting, said that, although a number of apologies had been received, it was very satisfactory to see the large number who had attended, from as far north as Reefton. and as far south as South Westland, more especially as this was the inauguration of a. series of such luncheons. Particularly, he wished to welcome the Mayor (Mr F. A. KitChingham), pointing out that it was fitting that he should be present as by law and tradition, he was the chief magistrate of the town. Luncheons such as were being held were most valuable, both from a social point of view and of allowing justices to meet and talk over their problems as justices. He hoped to see even more present at future luncheons. The report of the Council was read by the secretary (Mr M. .1. Fogarty) and adopted. On. the motion of Mr. P. .1. McLean, it was decided that no further action should be taken regarding the proposed amendments to the rules of the Association, which had been found satisfactory and adopted. It was decided that subscriptions paid in the current year should cover the period up to Hie end of September. 1939.

Messrs. G. H. Chapman (Ross) and J. Nimmo (Cobden) were, elected members of the Association.

The Chairman paid a tribute to the work of the official reporter, Mr. N. V. Lovell, in securing publicity for the Association in the ‘‘Justices’ Quarterly."

His remarks were endorsed by Mr P J. McLean.

An interesting talk on his world tour was given by Mr. F. W. Shallcrass, who was accorded a vote of thanks. A vote of thanks was also passed to Mi - . Ferner, for presiding.
