At the resumption of the wool sales to-day. 11.864 bales were offered and 10,550 were sold and -1.262 privately. The market was very firm at. closing rates of the last series for all descriptions. There was good general competition. with strong German buying and increased support from Japan. Greasy merino made 16d. ARAHURA SALE. Messrs. AV. Jeffries and Co. report on Arahura fat cattle sale: —The total yarding comprised 115 head of very good quality cattle, which amount was slightly in excess of requirements, as was indicated in the closing stages. There was a full attendance of buyers and the sale throughout can be classed as on a par with the previous one. One entry totalled 62 head and included some exceptional quality heifers one of which, reached the splendid price of £l4 12/6. Also one good Shorthorn bullock on account of the same vendor. Mr. T. A. Condon, of Tatare. brought £l6. and was purchased by the local butcher, Mr. AV. S. Howson. The following is a range of prices. For T. A. The Mataki return for the week ended September 18 was 350 z for 132 hours’ work and 8,500 yards.

RIMU DREDGE.

HOKITIKA, September 20

The Rimu dredge return is 185.9 dzs, for 135 1-3 hours’ dredging, from 51.463 yards treated.

NEW RIVER

The New River Gold Dredging Company, Ltd., reports for the year ended July 31, 1938. that, the dredge recovered 1.4240 z of retorted gold at an average a week of 3loz 15dwt. The net value recovered a yard was 5.7 d, compared with 7d for the previous year. Working costs, including £1.465 depreciation on the dredge, were 3.7 d a yard, and working profit 2d a yard, compared with 4.6 d and 2.4 d respectively a year ago. Since the date of balance the value of gold recovered has been 8d a yard.

The average working hours were 119 ci week for 45 weeks for an average weekly yardage of 9,960, or a total yardage of 448,000 for the year, compared with 312,100 yards in the previous year.

Gold export tax amounting to £B9O was paid during the year. At the date of balance the amount owing to the dredge builders was £299, and to second debenture holders £1,523. During the year, £2.956 was paid to the builders and £7OO to the second debenture holders. Since the date of balance, payment to the builders has been completed, and a further £9OO paid to the second debenture holders. The accounts show a net profit on the year’s workings of £2.312. The profit and loss appropriation account stands in the balance-sheet at £3.463.

PUBLIC TRUST OFFICE. Estates of a value of £585,192 were reported and accepted for administration by the Public Trustee during the month of August 1938. The total value of the estates and funds under administration by the Public Trustee on the 31st March. 19§8, was £60,815,306, and the new business for the five months ended 31st August, 1938, was £2,762,827. Grants of administration made by the Court in favour of the Public Trustee- numbered 255 for the month. During the month 420 new wills appointing the Public Truste executor were prepared on behalf of testators and lodged for safe custody, and 386 existing wills were revised to provide for changes desired by testators. The total number of wills now held in the Public Trust Office on behalf of living persons is 91,455.
