WATERING SERGEANTS’ BEER
TOWER MESS CATERER LONDON, August. 5. Sergt. Charles Frederick Jackson, of the Ist Bn. the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, agreed at a Chelsea court-martial. yesterday, that, while he was sergeants’ mess caterer al the Tower of London. he adulterated beer with water.
lie pleaded guilty to charges of adulterating half of the beer in his charge; performing his duties so negligently that a loss of £B/7/- was causefl. and absenting himself without leave. Samples of the beer showed, it was stated, that water had been added to a six-gallon cask.
Jackson pleaded that when he was posted to the Tower anti separated from his wife and family, he had to keep himself and his home going, and became involved in financial troubles. He had. to borrow Io buy necessities for his wife and. child.
