TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME Sept. 17—Ashburton. Sept.l7—Foxton. ( Sept. 17, 19—Avondale. Sept. 22 24—Geraldine. , Sept.24—Marton. October I—Otaki-Maori. October I—Kurow.1 —Kurow. October 20, 22, 24—Wellington. October 22 24—Gore. October 24—North Canterbury. October24—Waverley. October 24—Waikato Hunt. October 27, 29—Poverty Bay Turf. October 29 —Banks Peninsula. October 29—Rangitikei. October 29—Rotorua-Bay of Plenty.

Avondale Scratchings: Yesterday’s scratchings for the Avondale meeting were: —All engagements: Kobe, Silver Stick, at 2.25 p.m.; 1 Cup, Armacourt at 11.55 a.m.; Gay Rebel, 1.55 p.m.

Taurangi: Although Taurangi missed a place in both her races at Wanganui last week, and does not appear likely to take classic honours, she is a smartlooking filly with plenty of pace, and should pay her way in sprint races during the season. N.Z. Bred:

At the Richmond, New South Wales, meeting last week, the Fourteen-Two Handicap was won by the New Zea-land-bred filly Young Pat, by ColossusHallowroz, owned by Mr. A. Soles. An easy winner at the Newcastle Cup meeting,' where Cerne Abbas ran a bad race, was Postman, a colt by Defoe from Brown Paper, and: for whom Mr. M. Gearin paid 250 guineas at the Trentham sales. To Baffles:

Mares booked to the imported sire Baffles this season include Lady Willonyx, Erry Vai, Appendage, Starbeam, Alonsoa, Veloce, Myola, Hinewai, Enchantment, Sunny Song, Spear Lassie, Tino W r aiata, Princess Elizabeth, Rita’s Lass, Star of Gold, Peggy Defoe, Drop One, Kentucky Song and Ornamental. Baffles is a son of the famous Blandford, sire of three Derby winners. Kobi Knocked:

The two-year-oldj Kobi received a knock in the Debutant Stakes at Wanganui and it was decided that he v/ould not accompany his stable-mates Francis Drake and Coronation, to Auckland for the Avondale meeting. Kobi, by Bulandshar from Lucinette, was one of the best-looking youngsters produced at Wanganui, and he should do better when more matured. At Rand wick:

A Sydney cablegran? stated that at the two-year-old trials at Randwick yesterday an outstanding performance was recorded by Mr. J. T. Jamieson’s filly Folk Song (by Siegfried—Princess Belle), which dead-heated in the fourth heat with Mr. E. J.Watt’s Gold Crest (by The Buzzard). The time was 51secs. for the four furlongs. Land Raid:

Mr. A. B. Spiers’ Land Raid, trained by C. J. Walsh at Omoto, left last evening, for Ashburton, where to-mor-row, he will race in the Spring Handicap. Land. Raid has done all that has been asked of him in a highly satisfactory manner, since he raced so prominently at the National meeting, and he must have good prospects with 8.0. to-morrow.

Disappointing: The form, of Gay Son and Homily at Wanganui last w’eek, was slightly disappointing, but neither was disgraced and they should be all the better for the racing. Gay Son has developed into a very sturdy colt, and he might make rapid progress in the next month or two. Homily looked above herself and, although inclined to be excitable, she is a nice filly who should display improvement in her next few starts.

Pas de Cheval: Factors in the success of Pas de Cheval in the Debutant Stakes at Wanganui were that he was forward and also jumped out smartly. There did not appear to be anything special about the performance, but his forward condition should make him difficult to beat. Tn the past, winners of. the Debutant Stakes have failed to achieve much success, and in consequence, the win of Pas de Cheval is not likely to be over-estimated.

Although the Chokebore acceptors for the Ashburton meeting appear in the racebook under the name of the Estate of the late Sir Charles Clifford, none of them will be racing.

.Some additional riding engagements are: —L. J. Ellis, Last Refrain, Second Innings; G. Humphries, Petersham. The weather is dull 'and cold to-day, but there is no indication of rain, and the track should be fast for to-mor-row’s races. Riders for Foxton:

Riding engagements announced for Foxton include: —W. J. McDowell, Hanover; G. R. Tattersail, Quadroon, Prediction: B. H. Morris, Snigger, The Bigot, Royal Choice; N. C. Trillo, Entheos; H. Stewart, Vadanoe; V. Dye, Puroto, Rarotonga; 11. J. Callahan, Warehi, Barley Almond; J. Forsyth, Florence Mills, Merryman; P. Burgess, Rolling Home; J. Chaplin, Sporting Luck. It is reported that Florence Mills is unlikely to start.if the course is heavy.

Relative Membership: While the Canterbury Jockey Club at its annual meeting recently agreed to raise th© limit of its membership from 600 to 650. the Wellington Racing Club, whose membership is 550, decided to close its list when 600 persons had been admitted. At the time of the annual meeting this week, there were only 25 further vacancies before reaching a full quota, in both cases, the limit of accommodation was a factor in the decisions. A year ago, when the eventual absorption of the Takapuna Jockey Club by the Auckland Racing Club was arranged, the latter body resolved to extend its available membership from 500 to 600 to permit of the inclusion of Takapuna members. At present the Auckland Racing Club has well over 500 members. Riders for Avondale: Riding engagements for Avondale tomorrow, are: L. H. Clifford, Noble

ASHBURTON RACES.

PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW.

[SPECIAL TO “STAB.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, September 16

The Ashburton County Racing Club’s Spring Meeting, to-morrow, will inaugurate Spring racing in the South Island, and an excellent programme will be presented. Much interest will be centred in the first two-year-old race, the John Grigg Stakes, in the South Island, and several New Zealand Cup horses will be seen out during the atfernoon. The track is certain to be fast, and the betting will be on the win and place system.

The programme will open with the County Hurdles, in which recent wim ners are in evidence,* and there- are some promising novices engaged. Silver Sight, Sunny Comet, Top Rank and Mount Vai represent good form, and Contract and Chaste are useful. Of the maidens, Dividend will probably do the best. The favourites may be Silver Sight, Sunny Comet and Top Rank.

Provision has been made to decide the Novice Stakes in two divisions, there being 23 acceptors, while the safety number is 16. There may be some withdrawals, one being the Chokebore representative, Harwich, but not enough to evade dividing the field. Several have shown good form both in races and on the tracks, these including Black Coat, Comus, Remembo, Synthetic, Rebellion, Colonel Rouge, Gay Parade, Nigella, Phenomenal and Turo Koura, and the best of them may be Gfiy Parade, Synthetic and Rebellion.

A very 'attractive field will parade for the Ashburton Handicap, and speculation will be well distributed. On Grand National week form, Cape Gabo and Travenna have the best credentials, and it. would not be surprising to see this pair fighting out the finish. Mungatoon, Last Refrain, Petersham and Silver Slipper are all liable over a ten furlong journey, and they should all be prominent. An interesting; tussle appears to he imminent, and the final decision may be between Cape Gabo, Travenna ’and Mungatoon. The field for the John Grigg Stakes appears to be dominated by the Ringmaster colt Master Hotspur, who will he the first of his sire’s progeny to race. He has done everything to justify being a staunch, favourite, in fact he may monopolise the bettingon the race. Unfortunately for the Club, Winning Rival will not be racingowing to the death of her owner, Sir Charles Clifford. She has been showing marked ability on the tracks, and would have kept Master Hotspur up to his work. In her absence, the prospects of Nigger Boy and Cyprine look to be most favourable.

Some useful hacks •will contest *the Penscroft Handicap, and the issue appears very open. Several of the candidates have been galloping well of late, and the favourite division is well concealed, but a trio likely to take part in the finish comprise Wagner, Happy Night and Gold Boy. Trench Fight will be missing from the Spring Handicap. Kinnoull is to make his reappearance after a lengthy absence, and on his track form, he wall have to be reckoned with. Argentic is 'another resuming after a lengthy absence, but in his case the- distance will not suit him. The stable mates Ponty and Cocksure are interesting contestants, but will not be bracketed. Land Raid, Second Innings and Lady Leigh all raced well at the Grand National meeting, while Roy Bun has been galloping better of. late than for some limo past. The final summing up may bo in favour of Land Raid, Ladv Leigh and Second Innings. There will bo two trotting events on the card. In the first, the Selma Handicap, Drumcree, Fragment and Rosalind Maid look likely, and in the second, the Belfast Handicap, the prospects of Wharrun, Token and Llewellyn’s Pet appear to be tiie most favourable.

The following are the fields: — 12.15:

County Hurdles, one mile and a-half and 100 yards: Silver Sight 10.11, Top Rank, Sunny Comet 10.0, Mount Vai 9.13, Chaste. Contract 9.5, The Sandwichman 9.1, Night Sai), Dividend, Patuma 9.0. 12.55:

WESTLAND R.C.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Westland Racing Clu,b was held on Wednesday evening. Mr J. J. Mclntosh presiding. The Executive’s annual .report stated, inter alia: It is with regret We record the deaths of Messrs W. A Thompson, P. J. Kirwan, F. McCabe and O. Head. The club held a meeting on Boxing Day, and a. two days’ meeting in February. The former returned a small surplus, but the latter due to a. postponement owing to bad.weather, resulted in a loss. r Hie change of dates to February was’ popular with owners, and under favourable weather conditions, a better result, would have been possible. The accounts for the year disclose a loss of £lBO. Members' subscriptions increased, thanks to the personal help of Mr E. Stoop, and advances were made by some members). r rhe race ball returned a profit of £32. and donations to the amount of £27 were received. But. for the assistance from the rebate on the totalisator turnover, £467 in all, the deficit would have ben serious, indeed. The report was adopted. The balance-sheet, was read and adopted.

’Phe receipts were £3,503/10/6 and the expenditure £3,68’4/0/4, there being a loss of £lBO/9/10. The year, which opened with a debit balance of £757/4/5, closed with a debit of £937 10/3. The assets were £ 2,126/7/6 and the liabilities £2.517/10/::. The election of officers resulted: — President: Mr J. J. Mclntosh. Committee: Messrs .1 J. Mclntosh. J. J Breeze, A. W.. Yarrall. F. McGregor, H. Rutland. R. Adamson, W. A. Jamieson, IT. T. Parry, M. H. Houston, F.

Fane, R. Whiley and M. B. James. Judicial Committee: Messrs J. ,1. McIntosh, F. McGregor, R. Whiley, M. 11. Houston and M. B. James.

In referring to the composition of

the Judicial Committee, Mr R. Whiley expressed' the opinion-- that the system should be altered, and two deputies be appointed to act with the Stipendiary Steward in deciding all matters under the rules of the racecourse. . The proposal was not generally supported. An offer by Mr J. W. Greenslade, ot Greymouth, to donate a silver cup, was accepted with thanks, and it was decided to add the trophy to the stake for the Westland Handicap, at the Christmas meeting. Ou the motion of Messrs M. B. James and Parry, it was decided to ask Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., to make representations to the Minister for Internal Affairs,. for the retention of the rebate from totalisator turn-over for the benefit of the smaller clubs.

A plan submitted by Mr Parry, 'for the proposed change of the Judge’s box to the top of the grandstand was aproved, and it was decided to proceed with the work. The Club will hold its Christmas meeting on .the Hokitika racecourse, on Wednesday, December 28. Stakes to the value of £740. will be offered, the chief event being the Westland Handicap of £l5O, U.miles. Two trotting races are in the programme, for which silver-mounted riding whips, for the winning drivers, are being donated by Mr F. Keating, of Reef ton. On February 25 and 27 the Club will hold its Summer tWo-days’ meeting, the stakes being £ 1500.

Lawn Derby and N.Z.: The “Sydney Sun” reports that Lawn Derby will revisit New Zealand foi the New Zealand Cup, to be run at Addington in November. Lawn Derby will also make another attempt to lower Indianapolis’s record for a mile. Xervic’s Last: If the grass track is favourable, Nervie’s Last will make an effort to lower his free-legged mile record of 2.4 2-5 at the Auckland owners’ and trainers’ matinee meeting on October 1. At the Stud: The following mares have been booked to visit the American stallion Sandydale, who is standing the season at Riccarton: —Daisy Pointer. Slapfast. (imp.), Reylena, Mountain Princess, Grace McElwyn, Mary de Oro, Tairene, Naval Base, Molly Pointer. Silver de Oro, Rose Logan, Little Reta, Eva. Truman, Fantine (imp.). Midshipmaid, Arethusa, Tondeleyo, Vanity Fair, Haunui, Logan’s Lass Anna Wong, Hughenden Queen. Dillon’s Last, and Logan’s Pass. / Aiistraliau Pacers:

The Australia-bred pacers purchased last season by Mr E. G. Bridgens and! entered for the 1940 Great Northern Trotting Derby, have had the names Derby Huon and Jean Pronto bestowed on them. Derby Huon is a. colt by Robert Derby, sire of Lawn Derby, from Ella Huon, a daughter of Rock Huon. Jean Pronto is a filly by Pedro Pronto, sire of Nervie’s Last, from Vendome, a Globe Derby mare who won races in Auckland for J. J- Kennerley. Van Derby, in the same stable, is by Globe Derby,

sire of Robert Derby, from Roselawn, dam of Lawn. Derby.

Airflow: After a period in the matron’s paddock Airflow has been placed back in work under F. C. Dunlevey, and. the hope is held, that she will stand up to the work necessary to bring her - back to her best form. Over a long period she has been afflicted with- hip trouble, and when she was turned out it was considered that her racing days ' were over and she was mated with U. Scott. Although it is not known for certain, it is possible that she is now in foal, but if her work shows that she is now sound it is more than . probable that she will return to racing at a later date.

For Hutt Park: The Takanini trainer, F. J. Smith, will be sparsely represented at the Wellington meeting. Only three are engaged, Bexley Girl, Baron Alfonso, and a filly by Truman Direct from Daisy Pointer, the last-named being in the stakes. She has not raced, which will be against her, but she shows promise, and maternally she claims relationship to Frisco Lady and Frisco Boy. Both Bexley Girl and Baron Alfonso are giving away one second in their races. The latter a few years back threatened to go far in the game, but after seve’ral poor displays his owners, the Hon. Mark Fagan and Sir Ernest Davis, sold him for about £l2, Mi- W. Hosking being the purchaser. Baron Alfonso recently raced unsuccessfully, for C. H. Goodall, but is now back at Sfnith’s establishment. Bexley Girl made good progress last-season until she contracted some ailment which put her out of commission for a period. Reappearing at Wanganui in June, she was placed in both starts. The fact that Smith is prepared to give away time with the Jack Potts mare will ensure her plenty of support in her engagements. The only other northern candidate, Hottentot, is a maiden in C.
