Complete Recovery: Faculties, who was injured in a steeplechase at Invercargill a year ago last May, lias been taken in hand again by P. Boyle, and is reported to have made a complete recovery.
At Wanganui: Amatory is in fine fettle for the new season, and may pick up a stake at the Wanganui meeting. He will probably show to bettor advantage on Saturday. Versatile:
Travenna. is being kept at the versatile business and is engaged in both hurdle races and flat races at the early Spring meetings. He won on the flat and over hurdles at the Grand National meeting. Lacks Dash:
Amigo looks none the worse for his race at New Plymouth, but he does not seem to be putting the dash into his work that he did as a two-year-old.
Not Improved: Those, who went in on Sly Fox the second day at New Plymouth anticipating an improved showing received a shock. He did not look as if he could be greatly improved with the race.
Ruaform Retired: Ruaform has run his last race; Mr. W. R. S. Brewer decided that Saturday's race would be his last as he had reached an age when no improvement could ho anticipated. Pleases Himself: The Wrecker was considered unlucky to lose the September Handicap. He won at Wellington like a good horse, but ran like a duffer at the same meeting, and seems to please himself how he gallops. Working Well: All Irish is reported to be working .well after his National trip, and is to run in the hurdle race 'at Avondale. He is as lean-looking as ever —he was about the thinnest horse ever seen at Riccarton —but he seems to race best that way, and has won £lOOO during the last twelve months.
RICCARTON NOTES A. E. ELLIS FOR AUSTRALIA [special to “star.”] RICCARTON. September 8. The Riccarton track was again very busy this morning. Several useful, gallops were executed on the trial grass but none was outstanding. An interesting sprint was executed by the two-year-old. Master Hotspur. This was the first time the youngster had galloped on one of the big tracks, and he covered three furlongs in 38 2-5, easily beating Here Regis, a sister to Viking, in Jones’s stable. Contract and Chaste jumped four hurdles at a fast. pace. A. E. Ellis has definitely accepted the mount on Flood Tide in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and will leave early next month.
AUCKLAND HORSES. KILONSA IMPRESSIVE. [special to “stab.”] AUCKLAND, September 6. Some glimmerings of Spring came belatedly to Ellerslie this morning, although there was still a nip in the air. The tracks are now in much better order than for some time past, and there should be a good deal of activity during the next week, with the Avondale meeting just ahead. Kilonsa, who suffered defeat in the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting by half a head by Flood Tide, has held her condition and her six furlongs this morning was very impressive. Her companion was Land Girl, and Kilonsa was doing her work comfortably to record 1.19 1-5, which was the best gallop of the morning. El Meynell, narrowly beaten in the Auckland Handicap at the Hunt fixture. by Long Span, is another who has continued to do well. His six furlongs in 1.23 1-5 was a better effort than the time would suggest, and Kilonsa and El Meynell are likely to find favour for the Cup and mile race, respectively. at Avondale. Captain Bruce. who has been doing good work for several weeks past, conceded weight and did better than Fleetwind over half a mile, to record 51. Captain Bruce is due for an early return.
Trilliarch, who appears to be at. his best, shaded Marie’s Acre at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. Other fivefurlong gallops were by Piracy. 1.7 1-5; Tybalt, 1.7 4-5 easily; Hunting Maid, l.lh 2-5 under restraint; Armacourt. 1.6 freely, the last four in 53; Tupeoiii. 1.8; Te Maranui. 1.8 2-5.
After taking 14 for the first furlong. Knight of Australia, and Tip Toes ran half a mile comfortably in 53 2-5. Palmint, who is very well, beat Summary clearly in 51 4-5. Kelly pleased by running three furlongs, wide out, in 38 2-5. With any amount of energy unexpended, Cheval de Volee finished up a round by running the last half-mile in 55. Glen Abb and Birthday Boy were on terms at the end of three furlongs in 39. The latter covered more ground than his companion and is steadily improving. Paint has the reputation of being smart, but he was beaten by Silver Quex over half a mile in 52, the first furlong of which occupied 12 4-5. Silver Quex, on. this showing, is a likely maiden. She is a three-year-old by Lord Quex from Nukerakau, and so a full-sister to Round Up. Fidelis required 52 2-5 to complete his half. He
'is full-brother to Catalogue, with one win to his credit so far. Valmint shaded Ohmaha when completing six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, the first three being spurned in 38. Ohmaha was the more brilliant, Valmint the more solid. Bronze Emerald and Bonnybelle came home from the four furlongs post in 52 2-5. The former, who was a promising two-year-old, has wintered well. Atta Jack recorded 52 3-5 and is improving. Vaalstar and Mai de Mer took 1.26 2-5 for six furlongs, but they could have done better. Vaalstar is now with I. Tucker, at Ellerslie. Chelandry and Bide-a-Wee, who sprinted three furlongs in 42, are not among the most forward two-year-olds at Ellerslie. High Caste and Konneta ran a furlong. La Vie led out from Dark Legion and was still in front at the end of their three furlongs, which took 40. Both these two are in the Avondale Stakes.
Te Rapa observation is directed mainly to the activities of Royal Bachelor and Olympus, who are stablemates and run in the same ownership —that of Mr. R. T. Reid. Both are in good order and are expected to be good money-spinners this Spring. Olympus won the first division of the Sylvia Park Handicap and Royal Bachelor was a close third in the Jellicoe Handicap. Olympus is in the Avondale Guineas and his companion is also engaged at the meeting. Young Paddon should continue to race well under existing conditions. His track work has been impressive, and racing has improved him. At Te Rapa this morning, he ran the best half with Sir Tommy, in 52, which relatively was very good time for both horses.
There is not any extra activity at Takanini as yet, but to-day served to show the advancement of some of the smart two-year-olds quartered there. Gladynew and Proud Fox went three furlongs in 39 2-5 and the work of the former was impressive. He is by Musketoon-Caviare and half-brother to Rona Bay. Orelio was too good for Princess Vai in 39. Orelio is definitely the “star turn” at Takanini at present. With, a light weight. Gay Movie ran 38 2-5, which was an excellent effort and Little Star recorded 40. It has been decided to send Flood Tide to Melbourne for the Cups, and while he is away, Miss Lovelock will be in charge of A. Tinker. A. E. Ellis has been asked to ride Flood Tide in Australia. This morning Miss Lovelock beat Siega over five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, which time was also recorded by Maxam and Bronwen. These trials were done on the outside grass, which was dead.
ROYAL CHIEF
SYDNEY, September 8.
Trainer Jones states that Royal Chief is a strong public fancy for the Metropolitan, and would be a definite starter in that race.
Trotting
September 10—New Brighton September 24. —Wellington. October 1. —Methven. October 8. —New Brighton. October 15. —Waikato. October 15. —Manawatu. October 22, 24.— Greymouth. October 22, 24.—Auckland. October 24. —Oamaru. October 29. —Invercargill. October 29. —Thames.
New Brighton Meeting: The Minister for Internal Affairs has granted the necessary permission for the New Brighton Trotting Club to hold its postponed meeting on Saturday.
Special Edition: Special Edition, who started three times as a two-year-old and scored a second and a third, is reported to be training on satisfactorily. He was second to Aidershot in the Juvenile Stakes and third in the Sapling Stakes. If Special Edition had good engagements a good price could be procured for him. Shadow' Son:
Shadow Son, whose success in the Timaru Nursery Stakes drew attention to Red Shadow as a sire, will make his first three-year-old appearance at New Brighton, where he is well placed in the Seaview Handicap. Shad'ow Son is expected to develop into a fine horse, but unfortunately is not engaged in the Derbies. Voloma:
Voloma has been taken up again by W. Cosgrove, and the Adioo Guy mare is in great health -to begin a preparation. She will probably have her first race in the Invercargill Cup, in which she will be conceding 60yds. Her present mark will give her little scope in Southland, but in spite of this her connections believe that she will win one of -the Cup races in Southland.
Valuable Addition: Lusty Volo, who was recently purchased by C. S. Donald, is expected to arrive in October, and he is to take up stud’ duties this season. He is a valuable addition to the stud, and his importation serves to introdu.ee new blood into the establishment. He is a proved racehorse, and has already proved himself as a sire of speed in America, where he has got many winners.
Fraser’s Team: A recent addition to J. Fraser’s team is Worthy Empress, previously trained by R. B. Berry. This filly is by Worthy Bingen from Queen Chimes, the latter a half-sister to the record-holder. Worthy Queen. In her place, Berry has secured a two-year-old filly by Key de Oro—Regina Logan, therefore a. half-sister to Southern Chief. This filly had previously been trained by J. J. Kennerley, at Addington, and had shown a deal of promise..
At Winton: Keen interest is being shown in the Winton Juvenile Stakes, the first, of ■the three-year-old classic races instituted *by the Winton Trotting Club. The race is to be run in December, and 28 survive the first forfeit, so this may be taken as an indication that the majority are in work, and a good field is promised. One of the most forward of the entrants is Jack Bond, a v three-year-old gtelding by Worthy Bond from a Sungod mare, the latter the dam of Toorak.
Mr J. JR. McKenzie’s Purchase: “R. B. Plaxico sold to Mr J. R. M'Kenzie, of Christchurch, the pacer Widow Volo, 2min. Gftsec., and the mare raced in the colours of her new ownerat Cleveland,” says the “Horseman" of July 20. “Widow Volo is one
of the most attractively bred young pacing mares in this country.” continues the writer. “She is a daughter of Peter Volo, 2min 2sec, and her dam is Widow Grattan, 2min, by Grattan Royal, one of the greatest pacing sires of all time. Widow Volo has a three-year-old record of 2min Bsec, which she reduced to 2min 6isec this year, and should reduce still .further. Other foals from Widow Grattan are The Widower, 2min 3Jsec, Wedgemere Widow, 2min Gsec, and Widow Brewer, a two-year-old, 2min Sgsec. These are her first four foals. Widow Brewer appeared due for a much faster record but died at the close of her two-year-old season.”
