AMATEUR ATHLETICS
greymouth club. Mr E. B. E. Taylor presided over au attendance of members at the first annual meeting ol the recently-formed GreymoTith Amateur Athletic and Harriers Club, last evening. Four apologies for absence were received. In opening the meeting, the Chairman pointed out that the Club's (injects were to encourage and develop amateui - athletics in the Greymouth district. It was hoped to provide competition for sprinters, middle and long-distance runners, whilst field events of all kinds would be catered for. It was hoped, at first, to hold weekly evening meetings, with regular training nights. The rules of the Club, as drawn up by the interim committee, were adopted. The recommendation of the interim committee that the Club colours be an emerald green vest, with a’gold “G” in front, and black shorts with a gold stripe down the sides, was adopted. The election of officers resulted: — Patron: Mr A. A. Adams; president: Mr T. P. Ryan: yjee-presidents. Messrs J. Stokes, W. M. Stewart, J. Bluett, R. Fraser, and Miss M. E. Ray; club captain, Mr W. Mann; secretary, Mr J. Lynch; -treasurer: Mr I. Steel; committee: Messrs E. B. E. Taylor, H. S. Silcock, L. Wilson and S. McDonnell, with two ladies to be appointed later.
The appointment of handicapper, starter and track officials was left to the committee.
The Chairman said that he thought they would have little trouble over the reinstatement of athletes who had competed in professional events, as there had been no amateur club functioning in Greymouth for a long time. However, they wanted to get everyone reinstated before the season opened, and those concerned must attend to the matter immediately. It was hoped to have a strong ladies’ branch and to run events for them, as well as for boys and girls. Following a discussion, it was decided to hold regular evening athletic meetings, on Thursdays, commencing at 6.15 p.m., with the first meeting possibly early in November. Mondays and Tuesdays were selected as club training nights, commencing next Monday, at 5.45 p.m. The Chairman reported that tlie Club had been granted the use of the Recreation Ground, although arrangements woqlcf have to be made for them to work in with the cricketers. It was considered that a proper 440yds Olympic track could be laid out. Application was being made to the United Club for the use of the pavilion. It was decided to affiliate with the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre. A suggestion by Mr P. Peters, that the Club should be represented at the forthcoming gymkana of the Greymouth Physical Fitness Centre was referred to the committee.
In reply to a question by Mr V. Loft, as to whether it was intended to cater for cyclists, the Chairman, said that it was intended to confine the activities of the Club to athletics, hnd he suggested that the cyclists might take the initiative and form their own amateur club, enabling the two clubs to work in with each other. In reply to another question, the Chairman said that, as it was the practice, it was apparently in order for events for amateurs to be included on professional sports programmes. It was intended, said the Chairman, to allot points at the evening meetings, trophies to be given for the season’s aggregates. Any day meetings, however, would be in a different category.
At the conclusion of the meeting, short talks on training were given by Messrs Taylor ahd E. A. Bastings.
