MAULED IN LION’S CAGE
ATTEMPT TO RESCUE CUE. BELFAST, July 21. Mr. Richard Foster, head keeper of Belfast Zoo, was mauled by a lioness to-day tvhen he entered a. cage in a plucky, attempt to rescue one of two lion cubs over which their parents, were lighting. The cubs were born a few weeks ago' and. were to have been named by visi-' tors to-day. The dispute between the parents arose apparently throiig’h the desire of tlie lion to dispose of his offspring by eating them. .. . The lioness sought to defend the cubs and the pair fought for an hour. Mr. Foster went intothe cage and attempted to seize one of the cubs. But the lioness turned on him and injured his arms. After he retreated the fight went on for some time. One cub was. killed and the ether was so severely injured, that it had to be destroyed.
