WEEK-END ACCIDENTS

CAR AND LORRY COLLIDE pNE KILLED—SIX INJURED Ipeb press association.] AUCKLAND, September 4. One man was killed, and six other men were injured, in a head-on collision between a motor-car and a motor-lorry on the Frankton-Whatawhata road, two miles and a-half from Hamilton, at o o’clock last evening. The victims were: — Killed: Maurice Desmond Kelly, aged 19, single, a drover, of Lake Crescent, Hamilton. Injured: ETdward Skelton Dobbie, aged 21, single, a butcher, of Whatawhata; concussion and injury to eye, •condition serious. Ernest Ray Thorton, aged 31, single, ■a labourer, of Tepahu; a fractured skull, condition serious. Stanley Millan, aged 22, single, a labourer, of Karamu; concussion and ■abrasions, condition serious. Parnell Tai, aged 26, married, a lab-; outer, of Hamilton; fractured left leg, condition not serious. David Tai, aged, 24, married, a labourer, of Hamilton, fractured left arm, condition not serious. Albert Smith, aged 32, a labourer, of Hamilton; injury to forehead, condition not serious. . . The motor-car, which was being driven by Thornton from Hamilton to Whatawhata, was occupied by Millan, Smith, P. Tai, and D. Tai. The lorry, a two-ton vehicle, was travelling in the opposite direction, and was driven by Dobbie, who had Kelly as a passenger. . The impact was very severe, and caused the lorry to be forced around in the opposite direction to that in which it had been travelling. The radiator of the lorry was pushed in, and the car was reduced to wreckage. St. John Ambulance were soon on the scene, and removed the injured men to the Waikato Hospital. 'Kelly died soon after his admission. Smith was discharged after receiving treatment. Kelly was a son of Mr. R. M. Kelly, of Nihoniho, Taumarunui. INQUEST AT CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTCHURCH, September 4. Suicide verdicts were returned in two of three inquests concluded before the Coroner (Mr. E. C. Lewy). The suicides were Frederick Bonham, a butcher, aged 48, and Albert Edward I Darby, aged 40, of 63, Briggs Roads, ' Mairehau. • , According to the medical report, Thomas Patrick McGoverin, the subject of the third inquest aged about 52, died suddenly at Darfield on July 7, as the result of heart failure. WRESTLER’S FATAL FALL. _____ 1 AUCKLAND, September 4. The preliminary bouts of the Auck- . land provincial amateur wrestling i championships were marred on Sat- . urday by an accident to one of the j contestants,' which resulted in his ; death this morning in hospital. The victim was Herbert Walter Franklin, aged 24, single, the son of Mr and Mrs W. Franklin, of Newmarket. Franklin was engaged in a bout when the accident occurred, when he < wasi taking a fall to the mat. It was evident that Franklin could not have fallen in the usual relaxed manner, but took the full weight of his body on his head. The referee (Mr H. J. Ashby) 1 , immediately broke the pair. Franklin was taken to hospital, his neck having been dislocated. This is the first time in the history of the association that such a , •misfortune has been experienced. It ‘ is considered particularly unfortunate as it is almost impossible to cause ’ serious injury under the Olympic rules. Franklin was much thought of . by the Auckland Association, and had - been a leading amateur wrestler for many years. He had contested in the . championships as well as in many J other bouts in the Town Hall during ‘ the last six years. MAN ELECTROCUTED. CHRISTCHURCH, September 5. The storm that swept the province on Friday evening brought tragedy to the M'otukarara district, for Hector McLenaghin, single, aged thirtyeight, was found dead beside the fence which had been electrified when a wire from the power line was broken and fell on the fence. McLenaghin left his home to visit a neighbour on Friday morning. He , stayed with the neighbour all day and , left for home at 8.30 p.m. when the storm was at its height. When he did not appear next morn-

ing, on© of hisi brothers proceeded to * make inquiries, and at 10 a.m., he found the dead man lying beside the fence quite close to his home. The

power line was broken by the storm, and had fallen on the wire fence, about 50 yards from where the body was found.

TRUCK-DRIVER INJURED. HASTINGS, September 5. Found about 3 o’clock yesterday morning, lying unconscious in a motor truck near Hastings, Patrick Donnelly, of Raupare, was taken to the hospital suffering from severe head injuries. It is understood that the truck went into a skid and hit a telegraph post. Donnelly’s facial injuries were very severe, his Tight eye was badly cut, and his right ear was practically torn off. Hfe was the only occupant of the vehicle. The cab of the truck was extensively damaged. Donnelly’s condition was reported as satisfactory this morning. BODY ON BEACH. Found on the beach at North Okuru (South. Westland), yesterday, a body is believed to be that of Harry Rawlinson, Public Works Department employee, who had been missing. The body had been in the water for some days, and identification was difficult, but a coat, believed to have been the property of Rawlinson, was found a short distance away. He left the Waitoto River, early last week, for Jackson’s Bay, with supplies, in an open boat, equipped With an outboard motor. So far, no trace of the boat has been discovered.
