A New York cablegram announced the death of Cardinal Hayes.

Mr. W. Tj. Francis left this morning on return to Dunedin.

Mrs. J. IV. Hannan left this morning for Christchurch.

Mr. and Mrs. S. Campbell left today, on return to Wellington.

Mrs. A. Quirk left this morning, on return to Wanganui.

Mrs. L. James left to-day, on return to Ashburton.

Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Berry left today, for Springfield.

Detective-Sergeant H. E. Knight left to-day, on a visit to Wellington.

Mr. C. T. Webley left yesterday on return to Nelson.

Mrs. R. Triggs, who judged the dancing sections at the Greymouth Competitions Festival left, this morning, on return to Timaru.

The death occurred this morning, at Stillwater, of Frederick Wesley, a native of London, aged 67 years. Deceased came to Stillwater in July last and had since been employed as a gardener. Little is known of deceased who was single, with, no relatives, but he was formerly in the North. Island. The funeral will take place to-mor-row, at the Karoro Cemetery.

Archbishop Mowll, of Sydney, 'was a through passenger by the Aorangi, which arrived at Auckland, to-day. He is accompanied by his; wife, and alsc his senior chaplain, Archdeacon Johnstone. He will spend six months abroad visiting England, and India, returning to Australia through Singapore ana East Indies. The Archbishop will address meetings in England and ’. attend a World Missionary Conference at Madras. —Press Assn.

Mr. G. E. F. Wood, Chief Compiler in the Government Statistician’s Office, has been appointed Government statistician in Palestine under- the jurisdiction of the British Colonial Office. The appointment is in.pursuance of .the policy of that Office in taking suitable members of the public service within the Dominions, for selected positions. Mr. Wood was educated at the Greymouth District High School, the Waitaki Boys’ High School, and Victoria College. He is an M.A., with honours, and was senior scholar in Economics in 1921. He joined the Statistician’s Office in i!921, became, compiler in 1926, and chief compiler . in 1937. He is married, and is taking his family with him. —Press Assn.

The death occurred suddenly early yesterday morning of Mrs. Mary Glynn, widow of William Glynn, of Runanga. A native of Greymouth, aged 62 years, deceased had been a resident of Runanga for the past 29 years. Her husband predeceased her in 1919, and she is survived by two daughters and three sons. The daughters are Misses Alecia (Greymouth) and Julia (Christchurch), and the sons, •John, William and Richard (all of Runanga. She also leaves two sisters, Miss Ellen and Catherine Spencer (South Beach), and one brother, JVI

Richard Spencer (South Beach). The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving the Sacred Heart Church, Runanga, at 2 p.m., for the Karoro Cemetery.

The deatli occurred at her residence. Moss Street, yesterday afternoon, of Mrs Sarah Mary Bridget Giilin, a native of Ferbane, Offaly, Ireland, aged SS years. She left Ireland for Melbourne at the age of twelve. In 1865 she arrived in Hokitika, and in 1867 married Patrick Joseph Gillin in No Town. They removed to Kamaka, and engaged in farming, and whilst there reared a family of fourteen children (12 daughters and two sons). Eight years after her husband’s death in 1905. Mrs Gillin removed'with her family to Greymouth, where she resided until her death, which occurred after a short illness. She is survived by one son (Mr Patrick Gillin), and eight daughters, Dora. (Mrs E. Matthews. Greymouth), Teresa (Mrs Goldsmith). Sarah Ellen (Mrs T. Campbell. Lower Hutt), Monica (Mrs J. A. C. Bayne. Christchurch), Kit (Mrs .). D. Fenn, Lower Hutt), Ruby (Mrs 11. R. Morgan, Wanganui). Marie (Mrs W. M. Dailey, Lower Hutt), and Kath (Mrs T. Coll, Greymouth). The daughters who predeceased her were Daisy, who died at Wanganui, 1914, and Mary Frances (Mrs Fleming), who died in 1937. There are also twenty-six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. The funeral will, leave St. Patrick's Church to-morrow morning, following Requiem Mass at 9.30 o’clock.
