COUNCIL’S MEETING. [PEE PBESS ASSOCIATini;.] WELLINGTON, September 4. The desire of the Government t<> make New Zealand’s defence as 1 secure as possible was emphasised by the. Prime Minister (Mr Savage) in an interview at the end of a meeting of the Council of Defence, held on Saturday morning. Mr Savage sa,d that the meeting had not been called specifically because of the present tenseness in European affairs. but the council had originally been established because of the unsettled world conditions:, and subsequent developments had justified the Government’s action. The heads of the three services—the Army, the, Navy, and the Air Porce —were, present, at the meeting, the Prime Minister said. Reasonable preparations for emergencies were- considered.
“Wo are hoping that wiser counsels will prevail in Europe, and that peace will be maintained, hut of course avo must, he prepared for the worst.’’ said Mr Savage. “We are in daily communication with the British Government. which i.-i keeping us fully advised about, the present, situation.” Mr Savage emphasised that, the Government was not hiding anything from the people, and was not. holding any information in reserve to “spring on the public.”
