COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

CONCLUDING DEMONSTRATION The thirty-first festival of the Greymouth Competitions Society was brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday night, when the final demonstration concert was presented to a crowded audience in the Greymouth Town Ilall. A splendid programme Won .unstinted applause. Cups, valued nt about £l5O, and trophies, were exhibited on the stage during the evening, and provided testimony of the support accorded the Society by the public of Greymouth. Prior to the programme, Mr. T. Crankshaw played selections on the Hammond organ, and at the interval, by special request, he played “Silent Night, Holy Night’’ (Gruter). At the conclusion of the concert, Veh. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn, President- of the Society, said he was happy to announce that the festival had heen a splendid financial success, and he thapked patrons most sincerely on behalf of the Society, for their generpps support. He expressed his thanks to Mr. Ford, agent for Chas. Begg and Co., Ltd., for the loan of pianos and the Hammond organ, and also Mr. T. Crankshaw for his fine services as organist; Messrs. J. M. Mitchell and Co., for the loan of stage furniture;' the donors of trophies, and all who had in any way contributed towards the success of the festival. One of the greatest factors in the success of the week, he said, was the efficient, manner in which the programmes had' been conducted, and, in this connection, the Society was indebted to Mr. C. T. Webley, of Nelson, who had gratuitously given a week~of his time to assist in the conduct of the festival. At the Archdeacon’s request, the audience carried a vote of thanks to Mr. Webley, by acclamation. Lastly, said the Archdeacon, the Society was grateful to the competitors, and their teachers, without whom there could have been no Competitions. Archdeacon Jermyn then presented the cups and awards won during the festival, and after those presentations, he presented to Mr. Webley, on behalf of the Committee, a diningroom clock, in appreciation of his services. Mr. Webley was accorded musical honours. The festival was brought to a. close with the singing of the National Anthem. THE AWARDS.
