TROUT HATCHERY
AT STATE GAME FARM. tPEB PBKSB ASSOCIATION.] ROTORUA, September 3. A ceremony of considerable interest to sportsmen in the North Island took place this morning, when the Minister for Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry officially opened the new State game farm at Ngongataha. An exceptionally large and representative gathering was present, comprising delegates from nearly all the acclimatisation societies and rod and gun clubs in the North Island. Tributes to the enthusiastic interest taken in angling and shooting by -the Minister were paid by various speakers, including the Mayor of Rotorua (Mr T. Jackson), president of the North Island Acclimatisation Societieis’ Council, Mr F. E. McKenzie (Auckland), and Mr H. Tai Mitchell, on behalf of the Maori race. After dealing extensively with the record of the Rotorua fisheries, covering half a century of work by enthusiastic veteran sportsmen, Mr Parry said; “Yesterday is gone, and to-day is here, bringing with it new ideas, based upon the experience gained and the investigation done in the past. The hatchery we are opening to-day has been made necessary to meet the growing needs of the district for the yearly supply of fish.”
Mr Parry also referred to the great difficulties faced by the interested associations and' the Department. He expressed the hope that the sporting organisations would continue working for the betterment of the sport in New Zealand.
