CZECH SETTLEMENT
LORD RUNCIMAN’S ESTIMATE BOTH SIDES DESIRE PEACE [by CABLE PBESrt ASSN. COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. August 10, 1 p.m.) PRAGUE, August 9. Lord Runciman is authoritatively reported to be optimistic as to the possibility of u favourable settlement of the Czech problem. Officials in contact with. Lord Runciman say he is impressed with the serious desire of all parties for a. peaceful settlement. It is understood he has received assurances that the Government and the Sudeten Germans will compromise to a greater extent, provided Britain will sponsor the eventual agreement. LONDON. August 9. Lord Runciman issued the first, official communique, stating that he had a conference with Dr. Hodza, regarding the next step for further elucidation and co-operation with the Czechs. He later received members of the Henlein Party, and further discussed the memorandum. CZECHS AND SUDETENS LONDON, August 8. There lias been a recurrence of incidents in the Sudeten areas, reports the Prague correspondent of the “Daily Mail.” Fights have taken place between Czechs and Sudetens. C I27UIAN X ERVOUSNESS. LONDON, August 9. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Berlin correspondent says that the nervousness of the German-in-the-street is increasing. At present, there is more talk of Hie danger of war than in May, when the tension appeared greatest to the outside world. The calling up of reservists for training in the Autumn is intensifying the feeling of uncertainty. Germans are beginning to inquire the purpose of the Press al tacks on Czechoslovakia, if it is not proposed to follow 7 them up with action.

The flight from the franc has resumed. The Control Fund is hardpressed to prevent a drop below 179. Operators are reported to be nervous over the labour unrest, and also the Czech situation.
FIRST LORD’S TOUR
LONDON, August 9
On arrival yesterday at Gdynia, the Enchantress, in which Mr Duff-Cooper is cruising in the Baltic, was met by a Polish destroyer, with Colonel Beck (Foreign Secretary) and Admiral Unrig, Commander of the Polish Navy, on board. After two days at Gdynia, Mr Duff-Cooper, will be the guest of Colonel Beck at Danzig.
