NAPLES —THE CITY OF SONG.— Front the tiny when Greek colonists founded it, Naples has been a city of importance. After the downfall of the Grecian Empire, it retained its independence for a period and was united to Imperial Rome in 480 B.C. and shared the ups and downs of that great Empire. About the year 100 A.D. the city emerged as capital of an independent kingdom and maintained, its independence under various dynasties until it was united under the new Kingdom of Italy in 1860. This view of the Bay of Naples with smoking Mount Vesuvius in the background is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe.
