NEW ZEALAND TEAM WINS

SYDNEY. .August 8

The New Zealand basketball team which arrived by the Wanganella this morning, played a friendly game against the New South Wales second team, at the university ground. The New Zealand team was: Misses E. Howard, M. Tangye, J. Wilson. M. Howe, M. Matangi, E. Sinclair. .1. Mitchell.

The New Zealanders, who won by 19 points to IG, were obviously at a disadvantage, having just, left the Wanganella and were also unfamiliar with the interpretation of Australian rules, which differ in some respects from the New Zealand rules. The game also was played on grass. The New Zealanders took a little time to warm up. but led 6 —3 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter the home team drew ahead, the score at half-time reading 9 —7 in favour of New South Wales.

New Zealand was definitelj’ superior in the third and fourth quarters, and added 12 points to New South Wales’s eight. The New Zealanders’ positional play was better than that of their opponents. Miss Matangi played a splendid game and Miss Tangye also was excellent.
