NATIONAL PARTY

WESTLAND ORGANISATION. “Enthusiasm was (he outstanding feature, and I have never seen such a demonstration of co-operation," said the Chairman of the National Party Organisation for Westland (Mr .1. W. Greenslade). referring to-day. to the meeting held last, evening in Harker's Reception Rooms. Greymouth. "There was a. really representative attendance of every section of the community, over 100 being present, and there was a plethora of offers of assistance in the coming campaign. We are out to 'win, and no effort, will be lacking to attain that, objective. There is every reason to be proud of the meeting. and the enthusiasm behind it. Not only Greymouth. but Hokitika, and other portions of the Westland electorate were represented, and there is evidence that record support will be forthcoming for the Party. The organisation will be carried out on a, greater scale than on ant' previous occasion. Arrangements for the campaign were outlined. and these will be intensified from now onwards. A certain amount has already been accomplished, and another meeting will be held, next week, to further the organisation in town and country districts. It is intended to form committees in all parts of the electorate." An address was given by the National candidate. Mr E. B. E. Taylor, and ho proved himself io be a fluent, forcible speaker. Ho gave a report of the recent conference of the Party, held in Wellington, and traced the lines on which, his campaign in Westland will be conducted. Musical items wore contributed during the evening, and refreshments were served. Mr S. A. N. Sullivan, of Greymouth, has been appointed organising-secre-tary, and an office is to bo opened in Greymouth. at tin early date. ROSKIf.L CANDIDATE. AUCKANJ), August 1. Following a. ballot by a representative gathering of financial members of the National Party in the Roskill electorate., Mr A. S. Bailey was chosen as the official candidate to contest the seat, at the General Election. The selection is subject to the approval of National Party headquarters in Wellington. i Mr Bailey headed'the poll at the recent Auckland City Council election. "POLITICAL EAGLETS." “The four-day conference of the National Party candidates which was held in Wellington was significant for many things,” said Mr F. W. Doidge on his return to Tauranga. “Most significant is the type of candidate coming forward in the National Party’s interest. In the old days we had in Parliament men of the type of Massey, Ward, Herries. Herdman. James Allen. Wilford, Tommy Taylor, Dr. Bedford. F. M. B. Fisher, “Waki" Fraser, and J. A. Millar—men who would have made their mark in any g parliamentary institution in the | world. Everyone knows the extent to g which parliamentary representation g has deteriorated to-day. But the next | Parliament, as evidenced by the re- | cent gathering in Wellington, will I contain men who will again lift par- ! liamentary representation to the | highest standard. | “What struck me most of all," j added Mr Doidge, “is the extent to ; which youth predominates amongst j the. National Party’s selected candi- S dates. A first-rate Rugby fifteen § could be chosen from their ranks. I Quite a number are tsill in their & twenties. The vigorous young man- E hood of New Zealand will be well represented on the hustings at this j election. The hackneyed cry of our a opponents that we are the “old gang" | is routed by a glance at the group | photograph of the candidates. We are * not a. party of political Bluebeards, On I the contrary, the fight will be carried j into the constituencies by a group a consisting in the main of earnest and splendid young men. Theirs will be a call to youth. This election will go l down in history as the fight for free- q dom fought by a band of ‘Political Eaglets.’ ” i
