AUCKLAND RATES
COUNCIL REVERSES DECISION. [per press association.] AUCKLAND, July 1. The estimates for the current financial year, together with a proposal that the city rates' be increased by 2Adi in tlie At, which were submitted by the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis), at a. meeting of the City Council on Thursday of last week, and rejected, camo up for consideration! again at a special meeting of the council today and' were approved and adopted by 11 votes to 8. When the estimates were presented a week ago, an amendment by Cr. J. L. Coakley that the rates remain the same as last year, was carried, the six Labour members of the council and Cr. W. R. Fee voting with the mover. Notice of motion to rescind this decision was immediately given by Cr. J. A. C. Allum, and' it was at to-day’s meeting that this motion was adopted, followed by a further motion adopting the estimates. Including the Mayor, there were 19 members of the Council present, and on this, occasion Crs Coakley and Fee voted with the six Labour members against the resolutions. The only Labour member' absent from the council was Cr. J. J. Sullivan. The other member of the council (Cr A. S. Bailey) .is at present abroad.
