FIRE TRAGEDY

DEFECTIVE CHIMNEY BLAMED

[PEU PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI, June 20.

That Jack Roiall, aged 2t, and Dorothy May Roiall, aged 18 months, died from asphyxiation and burning in the destruction of their home by fire due to a defective chimney was the verdict returned at the inquest at Ohakune by the District Coroner (Mr. W. H. Sandford). Evidence given by the children’s grandfather led the Coroner to inspect the chimney, and it was found that a crack had developed between new and old brickwork when alterations were made to the fireplace some years ago. This crack had been hidden by a mantelpiece. In view of this disclosure, the police opinion that the children had caused the fire was amended in favour of the Coroner’s ruling.
