ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

[to the editor.] Sir, —Last Tuesday evening’s issue ol’ the “Star,” in reporting the annual meeting of the Acclimatisation Society mentioned that the President, in the course of his remarks, said that In; did not think they should he worried by finance again, and no wonder, when of a total revenue for the year of £364/4/8, lines totalled £'i7/!»/2. A perusal of the figures shows that these tines, which total almost 16 per eent. of the annual income, were nearly sufficient to pay the Secretary's salary, printing and postages, telephone rentals and hank charges for Hie whole year, so evidently it is the poor unfortunates who have been mulcted in fines that have “carried the baby” during the last twelve months. Probably your readers do not know that the sawmilling industry has been severely harassed during the last twelve months by the Court actions taken by the Society against millers running sawdust into some of the streams in the district. In most cases fines of £lO have been inflicted by the Court, and all of this money ultimately finds its way into the coffers of the Acclimatisation Society. I think it only right in the interests of the sawmilling industry generally that, these facts should be made public, and I trust that you will publish them.—Yours, etc., “SAWMILLER.”
