WAR MEMORIAL. [PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, May 18. Australia House officials returned from an inspection of the Villers Bretonneux memorial, and report that it is almost finished. They brought back photographs illustrating the beauty of the memorial. The entrance comprises two pavilions, three flights of stairs leading up to the great war stone, whereafter there is a turfed avenue 380 yards long flanked by 2000 graves, including, 770 Australian. A graceful tower rises at the end of the avenue. A Cross of Sacrifice 40ft. high stands in the centre. The general effect is imposing. COST OF LIVING. . RUGBY, May 17. On April 30 the Ministry for Labour's cost of living index was approximately 56 per cent, above the level in July, 1914, compared with 54 per cent. a. month earlier, and 52 per cent, a year earlier. Von Cramm is appealing, despite the Judge's intimation that an appeal was as likely to lead to an increase as a decrease of the sentence.

Apparently repudiating Mr Farley’s leadership, on the basis of the incomplete primary returns, Pennsylvanian Democrats rejected Thomas Kennedy, who was sponsored by the C.LO. for the position of Governor. The whole primary trend, at present, is against the C.LO.
