TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS
Galloping meetings to come. May 19, 21. —South Canterbury. May 21. —Manawatu. May 21,23.— Waikato. May 28.—Foxton. Recommissioned: Wee Pat, winner of the Great Northern Hurdle race in 1934, has been taken up again by A. Kemp. She looks in excellent, trim to commence another preparation. During her retiiement she produced a foal to Autopay. Sound Again: The promising jumper Black Marlin (Lucullus— Mala Kaianga). who. it. was feared, bad ended his racing days, is now reported from Hukerenui as being perfectly sound, the Double having been located. He will soon rejoin the horses in training at Ellerslie. A Difference:
In the last Melbourne Cup. Wotan was weighted at nearly a stone above Floodtide. Although lie has won a race since returning to New Zealand. Wotan is placed 111 b below Floodtide in the Cornwall Handicap at Auckland.
Arctic Star
Arctic. Star developed lameness during the closing stages of the Wanganui Steeplechase last. Saturday, and many considered he would otherv iso have beaten Clarion Call. The trouble is not ' considered to necessitate a lengthy spell, but it. was had enough to cancel his trip to the Waikato and Auckland meetings.
Handily Placed: Malagigi is handily placed with 8.1 in the chief Hat event on the first day of the Waikato meeting on Saturday, and he will need only to give of his best on the day to be one of the Hardest. to dispose of. He beat, all but the placed division the first day at Avondale and was within a. neck of the winner. Airam. in the Autumn Handicap the second day. The long Te Rapa straight, will suit a free strider like Malagigi.
Undoubted Speed: The speed Hunting Blood revealed in his two races at Avondale, following on brilliant track trials, should bring its reward in the near futureHe has great galloping ability, and once it is controlled he will go on to win in the best company. He ran off the course both days at Avondale, and it. is probable that he will shape bettei on the left-handed tracks. Bunting Blood, who is engaged at To Rapa on Saturday, is a. three-year-old colt by Hunting Song—MultiShould Not Be Long:
Du Maurier should not be long in making amends for his narrow defeat at the hands of Dragon Moth at Pnkekohe. The pair fought it out stride for stride down the straight and only tho judge was in a. position to separate them on the post. Du Maurier was having his first race since his b ebruary outing at Te Rapa, and it can be assumed the Surveyor gelding will be an improved horse when he parades at Te Rapa, on Saturday.
McCarthy’s Team: C. McCarthy has recommissioned Screamer, who was gelded during his long spell, and Argentic is to lie brought in again next month. The latter has been spelling in a paddock at Riccarton with the yearling by Royden from Helen Cold, bought at Trentham in January by Miss M. (’. NN ilson (of Reefton). This youngster has furnished into a solid colt, and a snbstanttial offer was recently refused for him. In addition to Monastic, who is to be raced at Trentham, Miss Wilson has in work two fillies by Lord Warden from Amourette and Love of Silver respectively, and both are shaping well.
Interesting Foalings! Three English mares bought by Mi'. E. Steele at the last December sales served to English lime have all had foals at the Elderslie stud. Falcon, a well-bred mare by Elamingo. winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, from the classic winner Lammermuir, has a colt foal to the English St. Leger winner Sandwich. Doretta, who received a good advertisement last, week when her three-quarter brother. Mr. Grundy, won the Chester Cup, has a filly by Portlaw and the French-bred Karlova by Clarissimus has a filly by Dark Legend. All the mares have done exceptionally well since arriving at Elderslie. dyko to-morrow, the first of the winter programmes in Canterbury. 'Pho fields are all well filled, and that for the. Timaru Cup is of the same, high class as was in evidence for the Ashburton Cup last. Saturday, and it will be strengthened by the presence of Wild Career, who won at Invercargill last Saturday. Silver Ring is due to have another race, but on his Ashburton form, he can hardly be considered likely. Should he fail in the two races to be given him at the meeting, he will no doubt be pensioned off. at least as far as meetings away from the West Coast are concerned.
