LORD WEIR RESIGNS [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] _ LONDON, May 17. It is understood that Lord Weir has resigned from the Air Council in sympathy with Viscount Swinton. ’ Lord Weir joined the Air Council three years ago at Earl Baldwin’s request, and agreed to assist the Air Ministry and the Committee on Imperial Defence in an advisory capacity. particularly on industrial problems of national defence. PARTY APPROVAL LONDON. May 17. One hundred members of the Government have tabled an amendment to the Labour motion of May 13, which called for an inquiry into the progress of the Royal Air Force expansion programme. The amendment promises the Government the fullest, support and deprecates an inquiry as a hindrance to progress. The Conservative motion of May 13, demanding an air inquiry, has been withdrawn.
DEBATE POSTPONED. (Recd. Mav IS, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON. May 17. Sir J. Simon announced in the Commons, that Mr. Chamberlain’s indisposition will prevent his presence in the Commons on May 19, therefore the.., air defence debate will be postponed. MR. MACDONALD’S TRANSFER (Recd. May 18, 8 a.m.). LONDON, May 17. Sir E. Page, referring to Mr. M. MacDonald’s• transfer, said: We are all sorry to have lost Malcolm, who had such a splendid understanding of the problems, and was popular with all. We greatly anticipated his participation in the forthcoming negotiations. Lord Stanley is immensely popular with all Dominionites, and I am sure we will receive sympathetic understanding from him.
