May 21,23.—Waikato. REEFTON RACES. monipere wins handicap. The Reefton JoTw Clnl, «lnM it's Autumn race-meeting on the on race course on Saturday afternoon, n bowery weather. There was a good attendance, and speculation was brisk the machine handling £5.6 •> 10/-, as against £4581 at the Au umn meeting (on a Saturday) last year, an meeune, tv , h investincrease of u»/ • a ments for the two days totalled £8.742 10 The track was soft, and cut up during the afternoon, with the result that Hmes were slow. Not one favourite X during the day. and there were several more than useful dividends. The racing was highly interesting,, ant there were a number of good A feature of the day was the double success of Clubman, who won irnpressivelv on both occasions, and letui ed good dividends. This horse has always been a great track has not. always reproduced his t ack form in races. His double on Satindav. completed three wins for the Nightmarch gelding on the circuit. Monipere also completed three, wins m principal events on the circuit, when he Avon the Lewis Pass Handicap, with ridiculous ease. His performance was in striking contrast to his lifeless galloping on the first day, when he never looked a likely winner. However, on the first day, he slipped and nearly came down at an early stage of the race, and this apparently knocked the dash out of him. The meeting was splendidly conducted by the officials of the club, and the Inangahua Silver Band rendered a programme of music during the afternoon.

Successful jockeys for the day were: J McCaulev (two winners), L. J. Ellis, G. Humphries, A. Messervey. and J. W. Jennings (one each).

JOCKEY SUSPENDED. After the final event, the Farewell Handicap. T. W. Butler, owner of Windward, entered a protest against the winner. Clubman, claiming that Clubman jammed his horse in the straight, and also that Clubman's rider, J. McCauley struck Windward with his whip. The latter protest was dismissed. and McCauley was suspended for a month for interference, but. it was decided that the judge's placing be not altered. The evidence of the riders concerned' in the finish indicated that though there was interference caused by Clubman cutting across the field, there would not have been any different result. Contract and Windward fared worst in the mix-up. As there was no electric light on the course, inquiry was conducted in candlelight, while the pay-outs had to be made in similar circumstances. The inquiry did not conclude until 6.40 p.m., but dividends were paid out soon after G p.m. Remaining results were: — SECOND HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP 7 furlongs: — G CLUBMAN, H. NOTES ON THE TROTTING CANADIAN’S VICTORY. [special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, April 30. The recent Hawke’s Bay purchase, Canadian, won the Innovation Handicap at Epsom well from the two 72yard markers, Lady Bunker and Braemar. The last-named two quickly made up their handicaps, and made

the pace over the hist circuit, Canadian joining them on terms al iTie approach to the straight. Braemar tangled, bin. held third place easily enough from Pirate's Last, with Heather Glow, who got a big break on the field after a quarter, in fifth place. Favourite Beaten: Elsie Hamlyn and Lady Potts had control of the situation over the second half of the first division of the Devonport Handicap, the former just beating Lady Potts, a good favourite. John’s Last, and Bronze King, who attended them down the back the last time, retained their positions, and were followed’ by Winhisway and ?*tnny Parrish, but the first two wore definitely superior. Won Decisively:

Throughout the Fcrgusson Handicap. Nawton Parrish atid Star Pronto wore till 1 pace-makers, but the speed was not really on until the lust six furlongs. Nawton Parrish was driven confidently in front, hut crossing the top the last time. Star Pronto drew level and although the other was a length ahead again as they straightened up, Star Pronto won decisively. For the last round, (he field ran in close order, even Noble Prince, who ran off the course at the start, beingtucked in behind the field. Gold Dredge being fourth on the rail alongside Kewpie's Triumph. The lastnamed was in third place early from 36 yards behind, but he failed at the end. Gold Dredge came fast to be third, half a length in front of Willie Derby, Fernbrook Lass, and Kcwpie’s TTiumph.

Equipoise Unlucky: Isabella Pointer was driven out to win the Franklin Handicap from Keto Kura, but the unlucky runner was Equipoise, the win favourite, who did not strike his straps at the start and was last out of the straight. He gradually made up ground to be fourth, and he. will win soon. Kete Kura, the second horse, came home very well to heat Vanora, who ran into second berth behind Isabella Pointer early in the later stage of the race. Cavan Chief made a bold move forward half a mile from home, but he could only fill fifth berth, Bedford and Petite Jewel being- next. Two Protests: Pirate’s Last took over the running from Braemar entering the back the

last time in the Whitford Handicap. Stalky and Within lying handy. They entered the straight in the same order, but about 100 yards from the finish, Pirate’s Last broke and passed the. post galloping with heads between him, Stalky and Braemar. The stipendiary steward instituted an inquire. tl'ie result being that the winner was placed third, the race being awarded to Stalky, the dividends being paid accordingly. However, the connections of Braemar entered a further protest against (Stalky’s allegedly being trained by an unlicensed trainer. the inquiry being held after the last, event, and adjourned. The winner paid over a score. Another Surprise:

Another surprise was in store when Proletarian won the Henderson Handicap from Argolis and Our War, the favourite pair, nt the easiest fashion. 'J'he winner look charge leaving the straight ami remained in front. Our War"got into third place only by a head from Kewpie’s Crest. Valdor and Musketeer were in the light in the middle stages, but they had no chance with the placed division. Noble Prince, racing in a closed bridle, again went away badly and was never dangerous. Meritorious Win: Cavan Chief led practically all the wav in the Papatoetoe Handicap, True Trust attending him and still threatening danger at the distance, but he was relegated to fourth place at the end, Transwell and Bronze Queen outstaying* him. The winner was giving aawy time, but he won very meritoriously. Petite Jewel headed the remainder.

ROI L’OR’S RETIREMENT. The Rey de Oro—-Gold Queen gelding, Roi I’Or, hero of many notable battles on the trotting track, will make this last appearance with the colours (up on Wednesday at Addington, and for the rest of his days he will enjoy the run of Mr. P. Brown’s''property in I South Canterbury. He will be turned out in a good paddock during the summer and stabled in the winter months —the just reward for a horse that has performed so honestly. Roi I’Or did not start racing until he was four ; years old and at no stage of his career i has he been over-raced. He has not

won the New Zealand Cup, although he made several valiant attempts, but the Free for All, the Dunedin Cup, Auckland Cup. and the New Zealand Gold Cup at Wellington have all gone to the credit of his owner, Mr. P. Brown. When the inter-Dominion championship was held at Perth several years ago Roi I’Or was the only New Zealand horse accepted for, but he suffered an injury at Melbourne and got no further than Adelaide, where he remained until properly recovered. Although Roi I’Or won many races he was several times just beaten after puttingup sensation performances. With Harold Logan he holds the mile and a quarter record of 2,36 2-5, and for two miles he has registered better than 4.16 more times than any other horse ever raced in the Dominion.

Mr. Brown is quite satisfied that Roi I’Or does not now possess the brilliance that characterised his racing some years ago and he does not think it fair to ask him to undergo once again the long arduous training necessary to fit him for public racing. Roi I’Or has been a great racehorse and an ornament to the race-track. STABLE HANDS’ UNION CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. Stable hands in racing and trotting stables in Canterbury have formed a. Union which has been registered as the Canterbury Racing and Trotting Stable Hands’ Industrial Union. This is the first Union of its kind formed in New Zealand, but it is expected that workers in other centres will follow the lead given by Canterbury. Better wages and improved living, conditions are two of the main aims of the Union. It is stated no exorbitant demands will be made, and it is also considered likely that an agreement will be reached without much trouble.
