BOY SCOUT FUND

LORD NUFFIELD’S OFFER. [BBITISH OFFICIAL WIBELESS] , RUGBY. April 30. The b>y scout fund, .headed by. a subscription from the King and Queen, was launched at a meeting at the Mansion House, attended by the Duke of Kent and presided over by the Lord Mayor of London? li. is 30 years since the scout movement was initiated by the Chief’Scout (Lord Baden Cowell) and it has spread to 48 countries. It is to-day a •brotherhood of the world’s youth, numbering more than 3.000,000 members. Since the beginning of scouting the units of troops have been largely. selfsupporting, but the expense of tiaining adults helpers —in the United Kingdom there are 65,00(1 voluntary work —falls on the headquarters of the movement, which are also responsible for the purchase and upkeep of camping sites, and for specialised work among crippled boys, the blind and the homeless, and the sons of unemployed men. It costs the boy scout headquarters £25,000 a. year to guide and help the movement. This sum exceeds the income by £7500, and the deficits are at present’ made good out of legacies and. capital. The aim of the present fund is to place scouting on a sound basis for all time. Lord Nuffield has promised Lord Somers, the Deputy-Chief , Scout, £50,000 for the appeal, provided the fund reaches its objective of £500,000.
