BLAKETOWN RATEPAYERS

ANNUAL MEETING HELD. Mr. W. Herring presided over a well attended annual meeting of the Blaketown and Preston Road Ratepayers Association, last, evening. The balance-sheet was adopted as satisfactory, there being a credit balance reported. ■ The election of officers resulted as j follows: President, Air. W. Herring (re-elected unopposed); secretary. Mr J. P. drant. Re-election was declined by Mr. E. V. Ellery. -Tributes were paid to his services as secretary during the past nine years, and a. vote of thanks was passed to him. accompanied by a grant of £2 2/-. Treasurerer. Mr. L. Shuker (re-elected). Committee. Messrs E. Ellery. F. McEnaney. J. Kelly, ’senr.. J. Efford, N. Taylor. J. McGirr, F. McGirr, senr., J. Kelly, junr. , , What was considered to be-'the unnecessary delay in improving streets and footpaths at Blaketown. and combating tlie flood menace, was the subject of criticism directed at the Borough Council and Harbour Board; also the danger to pedestrians using the bridges between Blaketown and Greymouth, particularly to t-women with perambulators. The delay in removing the danger, to health, arising from the "frog ponds,” was also criticised. It was decided to write to the Grey Hospital Board, asking for direct access to the grounds between the hospital and the Old People’s Home, from the road around the aerodrome. The practice of driving stock through the Blaketown streets was condemned, it being stated that animals entered private property, and constituted a 'menace to the lives of women and children.

Addresses were delivered by Messrs A. H. McKane and P. Blanchlield, jun. (Mayoral candidates), and Messrs F. F.. Boustridge and J. Anderson (Borough Council candidates). They were accorded votes of thanks.
