S. AFRICAN ELECTIONS
CLAIMS BY PARTY LEADERS [BY CABLE—PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. April 27, 11 a.m.). CAPE TOWN, April 26. The United Party is contesting all the .150 seats in Parliament. The nominations include 103 Nationalists, 33 Dominion Party, 37 Labour, 31 Independents, three Grey Shirts, and three Socialists. Four United Party were unopposed. The General Election takes place on May 18. Doctor Malan, leader of the Nationalists, avows- that, the only solution to the racial struggle would be a republic. “When England places South Africa’s fate in her own hands, we are prepared to be England’s friend.” Col. Stallard, leader of the Dominion Party, advocates Empire unity, with the several Dominions to be free partners in it. General Hertzog characterised the demand for a republic, at present, as an absurdity.
General Smuts- urges the. people to vote for prosperity.
