The hunting of white butterflies is apparently a lucrative occupation in. parts of Otago where the pest is not so numerous as it is elsewhere, but the price paid per head is slumping badly. At its December meeting the Waihemo County Council passed a resolution to the effect that one penny per head would be paid for captured white butterflies. The meeting last week, however (says the “Otago Daily Times”) was interrupted on three occasions by small bpys who came to deposit their collections and receive the promised reward. Two of the boys had collected over 100 white butterflies during the past two or three days, and the clerk reported that the amount to be paid out to collectors was in the vicinity of £lO. Members of the council expressed the opinion that if the fine weather continued,' there was a strong possibility of the pests becoming more numerous and, consequently, greater captures would be made. It was, therefore, decided that, as from that day, the amount that collectors would receive would be reduced to a halfpenny for each white butterfly brought in. Reports from other sources state that the white butterfly has made its appearance in Dunedin, Milton, Alexandra, and as far south as Invercargill.
