TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME. April 29, 30 —Dannevirke, April 28, 30 —Reef ton. Broke a Leg: Free Rose, who was nominated for the Reefton meeting, broke a leg when on the journey from Blenheim. A dog ran out at her, and she fell over it. Transport Not Available: H. Nurse had made, tentative 'arrangements to .take Swordstick, Financiere and Gillie to Reefton but owing to being unable to secure transport for them on the mail train from Christchurch he cancelled the trip. Returned Home: Rebel Chief and Gold Coat were returned to Riccarton after the. Omoto fixture, owing to the former suffering a recurrence of his leg trouble, which has seriously restricted his activities for some time past.

Phar Lap’s Dam: Entreaty, dam of Phar Lap, who has an attractive looking foal at foot by Nightmarch, is to be sent to Australia next season to be mated with Beau Pere, whose fee is 200 guineas .

McCarthy’s Pair: Rabble is to race at Nelson after Reefton. He was accompanied to Reefton yesterday by Lisnacree, who is to be turned out. When she broke down at Riccarton before Easter, it was thought the trouble was in a shoulder, hut it was later revealed that a suspensory ligament had gone. It is doubtful if Miss Wilson’s filly will raca again.

Trip to Egmont: Arctic Star is due for'a trip to the Egmont meeting early next month, and will probably stay for Wanganui. He raced well at Riverton, and was considered unlucky not to have won at least one race in his three starts, which all brought in minor stake money.

Tangled: . Tangled more than paid for his Manawatu owner’s enterprise in sending him on the long journey from Awapuni to Riverton. He was in charge of S. Barr on the trip, and will remain with that, trainer, at Riccarton, until after the Grand National Steeplechase meeting. In the meantime Tangled may race nt Wingatui and at. Trantham in July.

Spelled: The smart two-year-old filly Good Passage it to be turned out for some months in the hope that her wayward race-day manners may be overcome. It is problematical, however, if she will forget her two experiences at Wingatui and Riccarton. and no doubt, it. would have been a wise move to have put her aside after the first lapse at tho former course. A remarkably .large number of inquiries have been made by would-be buyers, but Sir Charles Clifford and his trainers justifiably have a high opinion of the filly, and nothing but a big sum would lead to any business in that direction. Westport Meeting:

Permission has been granted by the Canterbury Jockey Club to the Westport Jockey Club to hold a, one-day meeting at. Riccarton, but difficulty is now being experienced in selecting a Saturday without clashing with either galloping or trotting fixtures. There is a suggestion that July 9 would be suitable, but. the last day’s programme of the Wellington Racing Club's Winter meeting will be held on that date, and this may be considered likely to materially affect the proposed fixture.

Comparative Weights: It is interesting to note that at Westport, in a five furlong race, Acceptable (a winner at Omoto), was called upon to give Financiere (whose only effort at Easter gave her a second placing at Riccarton) 51b.. and at Reefton there was a, difference of 31b. Potent, gave Financiere lTlbs. at Westport, and at Rcefton 71bs. only, in spite of Potent’s win at Omoto. Great Memory received 41bs. from Financiere at Westport, and lib. at Reefton. the former winning two races at the Easter circuit. Delium conceded Financiere 111 b. at Westport, and although neither won a race since, Financiere was asked to give Delium 51bs. at Reefton. REEFTON RACES. TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME The Reefton Jockey Club will open its Autumn race meeting on the Reefton, racecourse to-morrow, and the fixture will he concluded on Saturday. Useful fields are carded, with an average of nine in each race, and form at the Greymouth and Kumara meetings should be a useful guide to speculators, though the presence of a. number of fresh horses may upset calculations. Tho trotting events and the highweight race have filled exceptionally well, while the smallest but most select field will be the six in the Irving Memorial. Most of the leading Canterbury horsemen will be riding at the meeting. The usual, satisfactory train arrangements have been made, and luncheon and afternoon tea. will be obtainable on the course. The single pool system of betting will be used. Following is a review of the fields:

12.20. FLYING HANDICAP, five furlongs

The opening event has drawn a field of seven useful sprinters. Acceptable looks the. pick of the field even with 9.2. Copyist and Silver Lark have raced poorly, and Queen Linda has only a second to her credit recently, in novice company. Bonnie Agnes, half sister to Sweet Agnes, is hardly in* this class yet. Delium did not. race well when produced at the first meeting at Omoto. Gilford, a smart, beginner, has been consistent, without, winning. Acceptable is outstanding. with Gilford next choice. 1.0. ALEXANDER HACK HANDICAP, one mile.

Glenacre .. 8 4 Rabble heads' the list in. the Alexander Hack, and his racing of late, with an easy win at Oamaru, will see him one of the best fancied. Emmeline Girl has been consistent, and ran a fine race to get second to Po-

tent at Omoto on Saturday. Owlsgleam improved to get second to Great Memory on Saturday, and she should record a victory before the carnival closes. Contract, Clubman, Hunting Bag and Gasmask have done nothing to suggest their winning here. Gasmask disappointed over a mile at Omoto on Saturday, finishing sixth in a field of seven. Recent form points to Emmeline Girl, Rabble and Owlsgleam as likely to monopolise the betting.

1.40. PROGRESS HANDICAP TROT, 2.27 class. One mile.

Colonel Wrack ser Super Jack .. scr Four Square scr Wild Deer .. ser John Worthy .. scr Native Huon (T. I 12 Kay Francis .. scr fled Glow . . 12 Lough Erne .. scr Tonioro .. 21 Opportunity .. scr Atarau Queen 36 I’amelus .. ser 'Tarn .. .. 36 Peggy Petrova ser

Fifteen are set down to contest the Progress Trot, and of the 10 off the front Kay Francis and Four Square look the pick. Kay Francis on her second and third at Omoto on Saturday, looked a likely improver. Native Huon, an unhoppled trotter, will have her Reefton supporters. She is a classy trotter, but will not need to make mistakes among the pacers. Atarau Queen won well at Omoto on Saturday, and in her second start was going easily, in front when she broke a hopple. She is a good beginner, and will be in the money. Red Glow has undoubted speed, and Tonioro raced attractively at Victoria Park early this month following a victory at Cheviot. In a fine betting race, the favoured may be Atarau Queen, Kay Francis, and Tonioro. 2.20. IRVING MEMORIAL HANDICAP, one mile.

Silver Ring heads the list in the Irving Memorial with 10.0, and ridden by A. E. Ellis, the old fellow will not be neglected. He has done a great deal of work, but may be better suited by the final event. Monipere is in such great order at present, that he looks the pick of Ihis field. Two victories (at Kumara and Omoto) and a second constitute the Arrowsmith gelding’s record in three' starts at the Autumn meetings. Mungatcon has surprised by his forward showings since racing in the South Island, and with 8.6 he is entitled to consideration. Roy Bun will not be neglected if the track is hard, but he has failed badly in the soft going. Windward Avas the pacemaker almost, to the straight in the principal event at Omoto on Saturday, and battled on for third. The- Sandwichman does not. appeal. Monipere should be favourite. with .Mungatoon next in demand.

3.0. STEWARDS' HACK HANDICAP, six furlongs and a-half.

Great Memory won so well at Omoto on Saturday, and then put up such a good fight, against Wine Card that she will probably be favourite for the Stewards' Handicap. The Sandwichman should l?e suited by the distance'. Glenacre drifted early in his first race at Omoto on Saturday, but was finishing on in third place. A good beginning would find him hard 10 dispose 01'. Lady Middleham seems to have her lull share of weight, but. she won the novice race easily at. the first meeting at Omoto. Patuma, Queen Linda and Bonnie Agnes have not shown sufficient, form to win this race. Great Memory and Glenacre should keep the opposition busy. 3.40. FIRST HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, seven furlongs.

Potent, and The Masquerader have easily the best form of the higher weighted division in the Highweight Handicap. Metal Bird, Contract and Clubman have disappointed so far on the circuit, though Clubman won at Kumara. Gold Boy was finishing on at. Omoto, over a mile, and will probably be better suited by the mile journey earlier in tho day. Polistina will J)O found finishing on. and may have an outside chance. Potent, The Masquerader and Gold Boy are likely place-getters. 4.20. REEFTON HANDICAP TROT, 3.39 class. One mile and a-half. Kay .Francis .. scr Tarn .. .. 1Pamelus .. scr Jumbo .. 24 Parallax .. scr Lady Ann .. 36 Bed Glow .. .. set Superb .. .. -IS ll'aguu . . . . scr Big Nelson .. 60 Tonloro .. scr Eleven pacers are carded for the mile and a half trot, and Kay Francis and Tonioro should be the pick of the’ limit division. Tagua ran one good race at the Westland meeting in February, when he ran second. Tarn has disappointed, lately, and Big Nelson, with three wins in his last three starts, should hold most, of the others safely. Jambo is a useful pacer, but has run only one second in his last lour starts. Lady Ann should go a good race. Most, support should be forthcoming for Big Nelson, Tagua and Lady Ann in a. good betting race. 5.0. AU REVOIR HANDICAP, seven fur-

Acceptable. The Masquerader, ■Silver Ring and Windward should be the pick of the final field. Silver Ring’s running in tho principal event should be instructive, but. he looks io have a big chance here of regaining the winning 'list. Ho should encounter most opposition from Windward and The Masquerader.

SYDNEY SALE SYDNEY, April 26. At an auction sale of racing and breeding stock to-day, stallions were in demand. Heroic’s soft, The Marne brought 825 guineas, and Oro 425 guineas. Both were bought by Mr. R. Stewart. Among the racehorses offered was Gay Chou, which was acquired by a New Zealander, Mr. W. Devon for 425 guineas. Brittle Prattle was sold for 350 guineas, Impetus for 210 guineas, and Acinon for 310 guineas.

HOSTILE DEMONSTRATION. AGAINST U. SCOTT. CHRISTCHURCH, April 26. U. Scott, the winner of the Third Heat in the Inter-Dominion Trotting Championship, to-day, received a hostile reception, when he returned to scale, because of his. rather indifferent displays on the opening days, when his, great bursts of speed were' not carried on with good results. His reversal of form may be explained by a change of gear. On the opening days. U. Scott raced .in open bridle, hut before the race to-day. an application was made for a change. This application, it appears, tvas refused, and U. Scott’s connections considering that, with an open bridle, he would “pull himself to pieces," threatened to withdraw him from the race. U. Scott, however, was permitted to start with the change in gear, and, showing himself a very good.' stayer, won handsomely. After the race, a protest was* entered by the connections of the second horse. Pot Luck, and. the stewards have deferred their decision until a meeting at 7.30 to-morrow evening. The place dividends' have been paid on the second and third horses, but the win dividends have been withheld in the meantime.

NOTES ON THE RAGING

[special to “stab.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, April 26 Aristotle Wins Comfortably:

Aristotle was the favourite for the Melbourne Handicap, and' trotting solidly from the start he tvoni comfortably at the finish. It was his' second win since being converted to the trotting gait.

Mute, Lady. Sonoma, and Sister Mary carried on the running in the early stages, but Mute in the worst of the going, soon failed and Lady Sonoma, went on from Kippagh, Sister Mary, Mute, Garner and Aristotle. At the three furlongs post, Aristotle, trotting solidly, took the lead’ from Garner while Pilot Peter who had made a slow beginning, was’ making up ground rapidly. Aristotle came into the straight first from Lady Sonoma, and while Pilot Peter made a great run he could only gain third place. Directly behind, the placed horses were Kippagh, Garner, and Walter Wrack.

Aristotle gave a finished display, and was evidently suited’ by the track. His 3.37 for a mile and a half represeriteff a. better performance than the time indicates for Aristotle was always out several ’sulky widths from the rails. Even when R. Motz drew the whip on Aristotle he trotted in very solid fashion and has apparently now learned what .is required of a trotter. He should go on to still better things. Lady Sonoma had’ every chance and plodded along solidly but Pilot Peter made a bad break at the start and lost all chance. He showed plenty of speed once on the journey. Captain Bolt was never dangerous, and was plainly not suited by the going. The remainder failed rather miserably. I Won Easily:

Silver Guy did not make a good beginning' in the Sydney Handicap, and

with two furlongs to go he was well back, in the field. His effort over the last two furlongs left the others with little chance.

Sage King, Lightning Lady, Fremont, Red Pigeon, and! Repeal were .the early leaders and 1 with six furflongs to go the order was Repeal, Fremont, Sage King, Bing Crosby,, and Red Pigeon. Down the back stretch the last, time Red Pigeon, Twenty Grand and Silver Guy both made up ground, and the former and Repeal came into the straight, on terms in front of Twenty Grand and Silver Guy. The last-named finished very resolutely and won going away from the field. Red' Pigeon stayed l on to head Twenty Grand, ■while next to finish were Fremont, Dark Hazard, and Bing Crosby. The winner gave one. of his rare good displays, and as' at Tiraaru earlier in the season, he made a one-horse race of it over the. concluding stages. Twenty Grand, like the winner, made up ground in the. concluding stages and Red Pigeon again showed consistency. Fremont, had' every chance and was fourth and Bing Crosby gave his usual unfinished display. The two American pacers have proved nothing above the average. The best of the unplaced division may prove to be Dark Hazard. Outclassed the Field: in the first heat of the Third Qualifying event, for the Inter-Domin-ion Championship, the field' raced several sulky widths from: the. rails, and a brilliant last half-mile sprint by Parisienne left the remainder a hopeless task. In her inimitable style she outclassed, the field. v Blair Athol, Big Author, Village Guy and Joy's John were first away, but very soon Bonny Azure took the lead from Blair Athol, Village Guy, Worthy Light, and Lady Childewood. At the

end of a mile and a quarter Bonny Azure was in charge and collected the lap prize of £5O, while following her wore Village Guy, Blair Athol, Lady Childewood, Bingen Palm, King’s Warrior, and Parisienne. King’s Warrior moved fast down the back stretch but Parisienne travelled' even faster and on the extreme outside of the field straightened up soon after Lady Childewood, Bonny Azure 1 and King’s Warrior had entered, the straight. In the run home nothing had a chance with the. brilliant. Rey de Oro filly, who won very handily from King’s Warrior, Blair Athol, and Lady Childewood.

It, was another great, race by a great, little mare, who fairly outclassed her field in the concluding stages, i She was not the fastest time maker on this 1 occasion for King’s Warrior, who finished second registered 4.34 against her 4.34 4-5. This was the first, time in the series’ that the winner of the heat had not. registered , the fastest time. King’s Warrior again went a solid race and- appears to bo improving with racing. Blair Athol ran his third good race of the meeting to finish third and Lady Childowood was fourth, just ahead of Big Author. From End to End: Ginger Jack was made a warm fav-' ourito for the Kaikoura Handicap, but though he had every chance, faded into third place at the finish. 'Worthy King was first away from Navy Blue and for the whole of the journey the pair carried on the running followed in the early stages' by Elvo and Ironside, and later by Ginger Jack and 1 Agile. As the quarter mile post, was passed Worthy King was still carrying on merrily and he had a. good lead at. the straight entrance. Worthy King was 1 never troubled, and won easily from Navy Blue and Ginger Jack, who paced his last, mile in 2.12 3-5, tho performance of a. highclass racehorse. Ironside was doing his best, at the finish and may do even better in his next engagement. Lady Fame finished a bad last, and Southern Smile failed to move. off. Lucky Jack's Brilliance: Lucky Jack again gave a. taste of his quality in winning the Second Heat of tlie Third Qualifying Event. While Double Great, Rocks Ahead and Plutus made most, of the running from Nervie’s Last, Lucky Jack wasi third to last, until the last six furlongs was commenced. He then put in a run that paralysed the field and raised the crowd to a high pitch of excitement. For four furlongs Nervie’s Last, paced it with Lucky Jack, but when Berry shook the whip at Lucky Jack he put. on too much speed for the Aucklander and was racing away at the finish. The remainder were very tired and Cloudy Range struggling on gamely defeated Plutus for third, money. The remainder appeared to have had enough racing- and Lucky Jack was the only fresh horse at. the finish. Peggotty, one of the most, solidly backed favourites of the meeting, broke up at the start of the Tasman Handicap, and’ another mistake in a furlong cost her all chance. The bracketed pair Captain Bolt and Wabnooka filled the first two places and showed greatly improved form on some of their racing at the meeting. The victory was received! in ominous silence. When Peggotty broke up at the start, Little Reta and Writer set out to make the pace with Flotsam. Franz Derby, and Parrish Belle next. At. the end of four furlongs the order was the same and close handy were Franz Derby, Discord, and Bittersweet. Both Captain Bolt andl Wahnooka. made up ground in the back stretch and; entering the straight were almost on terms with Bittersweet. The C. S. Donald bracket had the finish to themselves and Captain Bolt scored a half length victory over his stablemate, with the consistent Bittersweet three lengths away. Flotsam was fourth, and Peggotty next. Captain Bolt had started earlier in the. day, but the state of the going possibly accounted for his poor showing. Peggotty, with ordinary luck at the start, might still have beaten the bracketed pair. Marsceres, who had been racing consistently well without winning, scored a decisive win in the Kiwi Handicap after G. McKendry had! stolen the race at. the entrance to the straight. It was clever reinsmanship on McKendry’s part that won the race. Marsceres began smartly with Golden Moness in close attendance,- but the former was eased and Colonel Bogey took up the running from Golden Moness with Marsceres on the inside. With, half the distance covered, Ivy Peterson had! run closer to the leaders Doubt and Colonel Bogey, with Icevus, Golden Moness and Marsceres following. It was not until the straight entrance that Marsceres made his effort, and while the others were well out on the track, McKendry slipped the gelding up on the inside and from then on the race "was between him and Golden Moness. A •hundred yards,/ 1 from the post Marsceres had Golden Moness beaten and then Great Divide challenged. Marsceres won very nicely from Great Divide, while .Golden. Mphess was third and Old Faithful with a great

finish was fourth. His form was full of promise. Sandusky and Agility were next..

Addington has been singularly free from demonstrations, hut U. Scott, when he won tlie third' heat of the Third Qualifying event of the InterDominion Championships received one of the most hostile receptions in recent years.

U. Scott was first out from Evicus, Aide de Camp, and Supertax, and then came King’s Play, Glenrossie, and Grand Mogul. ’When half a mile had been covered U. Scott was still making, play from Evicus and King’s Play, Aide de Camp and Supertax. There was little change in the order until half a mile from home when Pot Luck put in a brilliant burst and Supertax also made a move. Round the turn U. Scott, was still in front, and he carried on in easy style while Pot. Luck and Supertax both put in determined challenges. U. Scott was not troubled in the run homo to win from Pot Luck, while Supertax finished third ahead of a very tired field. The Australians Kolect and Our Walla made no showing, and the form of King’s Play was disappointing.
