Rev. Father Maguire left to-day, on return to Christchurch. Miss E. Ellis left yesterday, on return to Wellington. Mr. G. Anderson left yesterday, for Waipukurau, where he ■will reside. Mr. and Mrs. H. Cox will return, this afternoon, from Christchurch., Mrs. E. Coote arrived from Wellington by this morning’s air service. Mr. J. C. Ivory was a passenger from Wellington by this morning’s air service. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Henderson left yesterday, on a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Greenwood left yesterday, on a holiday visit to Auckland. Miss J. Howat, Cobden, left to-day, for Christchurch, where she will reside. Messrs J. S. Robertson and J. W. Callwell left by this morning’s express for Christchurch. Mrs. J. Simpson and Miss H. Simpson left to-day, on a holiday visit to Christchurch. Miss M. Stribling will arrive from Ashburton, this afternoon, on a holiday visit to Grey mouth. Mr. L. S. Allan, stationmaster, Otira, will commence annual leave on Thursday. He will be relieved at Otira by Mr. W. F. Callery, of Greymouth. Mr F. Quayle, who has been on a visit to his parents, Senior-Sergeant and Mrs Quayle, returned to Wellington, this morning. The Bishop of Nelson, the Rt. Rev. W. G. Hilliard, who is taking part in the Marsden Centenary celebrations in Sydney, will leave this week. He expects to he back in Nelson on May 27. Mr. Alfred R. Thomson, a portrait painter and mural decorator, who is deaf and dumb, and Mr. Edward Maule, an architect, have been electad Associates of the Royal Academy.— Official Wireless.
The engagement is announced of Jack Robert, third son of Mrsi and the late Mr J. H. Sparrow, Roslyn, Dunedin, to Isabel Irene, fourth daughter of. Mr and Mrs, J. E. Dixon, William Street, Greymouth.
Mr J. Roberts left yesterday, for Auckland, where he will play football for the Newton Club, in the Auckland League. Mr Roberts has represented the West Coast at League football.
Miss Ella Robertson, whose marriage to Mr Malcolm' Scandrett will take place on Saturday next, was entertained at a kitchen evening on Saturday. The evening was enjoyably spent in games and competitions. Miss Robertson received many gifts’, and the good wishes of all present.
Miss Edna Coumbe and Miss Mary Pollock whose marriages will take place this week, were met on Sunday by fellow members of the Children of Mary Sodality, and. presented with statues of the Blessed Virgin. The presentations were made by the Sodality Chaplain, Rev. Father Gregory, who expressed the best wishes of the Sodality to the recipients for their future health and happiness.
Mr. D. Calwell, engineering cadet on the Greymouth Harbour Board’s staff, has received an appointment, to the engineering staff of the Wellington Harbour Board and will leave at the end of next month for Wellington. Mr. Calwell is a member of the United Football Club’s senior team, and has represented the West Coast.
A Vatican City cablegram stated that the Vatican prelates are worried because the Pope’s trusted physician, Dr. Milani, is in bed with rheumatism. The Pope refuses to see another doctor. Dr. Milani has visited the Pope three times a day since his illness in December, 1936. Concern is felt lest the Pope should suffer a i elapse.
Mr R. J. Harrington left yesterday, on a holiday visit to Australia. Prior to his departure he was met by: members of the Blackball' League Club and presented’ with a travelling, rug. The presentation was made by Mr J. Dodds, who spoke in eulogistic terms of the work done for the League game by Mr Harrington, as Secretary of the West Coast League, and thanked him for the assistance he had given the Blackball Club. 1
