ARE WOMEN ILLOGICAL?
. JUDGES DENY IMPEACHMENT. Three Lord Justices objected in the i Court of Appeal in London early this .- month when Mr. Gilbert Beyfus, K.C., i remarked that logic was not a strong •point .With women. ; Lord Justice Greer : I do not agree with that as a general rule. Lord Justice Clauson: That will not do at all. It is a heresy. Lord Justice Slesser: If you look at university examination results, you will find that women take very high degrees in logic. Mr. -Beyfus: I will withdraw the . remark. ■Later in the case, an appeal against £550 damages awarded in a King’s Bench action to a woman for the loss of jewe.llery stolen from a room in llio Bull Hotel, Gerrards Cross, Bucks., Lord Justice Clauson said; 'T have difficulty in understanding the frame of mind of a lady going to stay at this little hotel for three or four weeks. What astonishes me is .that she should take about £7OO worth of jewellery there. She was not going to appear at public assemblies where she would be decked out in all her jewels. But, haying taken the jewellery there, I should have thought she would have taken very special precautions. Mr. Beyfus: She had no other home at the time. Lord Justice Clauson: Ladies, of course, must be allowed some latitude, but 1 cannot ‘imagine friends of mine normally taking £OOO worth of jewellery to a country inn. They would deposit it in a bank. Of course, I can think of certain hostelries where, Ji imagine, ladies with that amount of jewellery would wear a good deal of it.
The court held that Mrs. Frances Ada Shacklock, of Windsor Road, Gerrards Cross, was negligent in not leaving her jewellery in the hotel office, and allowed the appeal of Ethorpc, Ltd.-, proprietors of the hotel. Mrs. Shacklock was refused leave to appeal to the House of Lords. It was stated by Mr. Beyfus. on behalf 'of Mrs. Shacklock, that she kept the jewellery locked in a jewel case in a locked dressing case in her room.
