CORRESPONDENCE

COMPETITIONS.

[TO THE EDIT OU.] Sir, —It is with pleasure I have read in recent issues of the “Star” the letters in connection with the Competitions Society. "Hopeful’s” letter wian especially interesting. He is quite right in saying we have many talented performers in Greymouth, and the competitions are most helpful in bringing these to light. We are shortly running a shop day to augment the funds of the Society, and shall be gl)t4d indeed if “Interested,” “Another Interested” and "Hopeful” will come cut from behind' their nom-de-plurnes and give us the assistance we need.— Yours etc-, E. TROTT. [.TO the editor.] I have read with interest the letters on the Greymouth Competitions, and it seems to me, that the public are just waking up to the fact that our competitions are t’i huge failure, and can anyone wonder. Last year they were, put off for two weeks whilst our worthy secretary went away. When he camo back, the schools were in session again, and the parents b(ixl lost all interest, and these are the people wo need most to make our competitions a, success; also people walking in the hall without bothering to hand in a. shilling, and students having to wait weeks for their prize money and trophies, and other things too numerous to mention. Yes, Mr Editor, the whole concern is a huge failure, and I think now is a wonderful opportunity for you, Mr President, and' Secretary, to call a public meeting, and see if you can’t get some of these people who litre interested, ’to come in and give you a hand, because you certainly need it. — Yours, etc-. E. FLAT.
