COMPETITIONS

[to the editor.] Sir,—It was with great interest that I read the letters of “Interested” and | “Another Interested” in the “Star” referring to the local Competitions Society. The West Coast is recognised as possessing a great deal of talent, and until recently Greymouth stood out. as the centre. For some time the Competitions Society was a very successful body, enlisting the support of the public, and obtaining large and very- appreciative audiences, but now, alas, that time is past, and if the hall is half filled it is considered a good “House.” The fact that the audience, though small, did not lack in strength when expressing its appreciation of the various items indicates that the support of the publTc would be forth- 1 coming if the committee were to go about it in the right manner. Perhaps some more able pen than mine could suggest a method by which to overcome this obstacle. A committee of any Competitions Society is faced with many difficulties, but none which could not be overcome. We all recognise that union is strength and this slogan should be applied in this case by strengthening the committee and inviting interested members of the public to join and co-operate in furthering the education of the various competitors who desire an ideal to attain. The initial step in order to effect an improvement should e be at the hands of the committee by inviting support, so let us hope that they will appeal for the support of all West Coasters and rally all interested persons. If this is done we may rest assured of the success of the Festival, making the year 1938 a red letter year in the annuals of the Coast Competitions. Yours, etc., HOPEFUL.
