TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME, April 23—Greymouth. April 23, 27-—Avondale. April 29, 30 —Daunevirke. April 28, 30 —Reefton. Egmont to Retire: A Sydney cablegram stated that trainer, George Price has decided to retire Egmont, on account of his continued lameness. Big Turnover: The totalisator turnover of £89,348 10/- at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting concluded yesterday was the largest since 1925, when £95,603 was put through. Sydney Cup Winner: The trainer, D. Lewis, discussing L’Aiglon said he had won only a mid-week novice race before carrying off the Sydney Cup yesterday. “L’Aiglon was a mean, hungry-looking fellow, with outsize feet, but immediately came good after being gelded." Reminder:

Acceptances for the Greymouth Jockey Club’s second meeting to be held at Omoto on Saturday close at 5 p.m., to-day. Finished Well:

Polistina, now a six-year-old, has yet to win a race. At Omoto on Saturday, she was finishing on fast in second place over five and a-half furlongs, after being badly placed early. She was the outsider of the field, but she should be better supported in the six furlongs at Omoto on Saturday.

Disappointed: Gilford, after his second to Amount at Omoto was installed favourite for the Hack Handicap at Kumara, but he lacked dash, and finished only third. He was produced again in the Dillmans Handicap, and again favourite, again finished third, well beaten. Closed Up:

Fayo, jumping away best from an indifferent start in the Novice Stakes of 51 furlongs at Omoto on Saturday, soon established a good lead, but the Pink Coat, filly closed up. once they turned, for home. She does not look a likely winner over the six furlongs of the Trial Handicap, at Omoto on Saturday next. Redeemed: Glenacre was a good favourite at Omoto on Saturday, in the Stewards’ Hack, but after losing a lot. of ground early was never in the hunt, though he finished fourth. At Kumara, in the Hack Handicap, he was always handy, and came away in the straight to win easily. Ineligible: Mr. A. B. Spiers’ two-year-old. Brenta, has been handicapped for the Trial Handicap, at Omoto on Saturday, but the Dolomite-Gold w ell filly is ineligible. Two-year-olds are not allowed to run in any Handicap in which horses of any age other than two-year-olds, or three-year-olds are eligible. Three on End:

Amount made it three on end when he won at Kumara on Monday. He may have been a little fortunate , to get a run on the rails at a. critical stage of the open sprint at. Omoto on Saturday, for. Paper Note was at. that time well out in the centre of the track, and then finished on only a length and a-half behind Amount. The other two races, Amount won easily. He paid false prices both times at Omoto.

Early Return: Great Memory, recently purchased by Mr. R. A. Lees from Chokebore Lodge, won at her second start in the new owner’s coiours. She bad done little serious work since being trained by J. Stewart, and ran fifth, a long way back in the Stewards’ Hack at Omoto on Saturday. At Kumara, on Monday, she won the Flying Handicap easily. The race she had at Omoto evidently did the three-year-old good. She is by Magnus (defunct) from Retrospect.

Successful Breeder's Death: For many years one of the most successful breeders and racers of horses in Taranaki, Mr. Alexander Alexander died at New Plymouth yesterday morning. Many fine horses which made names for themselves on race tracks throughout New Zealand and Australia came from his stud, outstanding amongst them being Silver Link. Mr. Alexander also took a keen interest in the administrative side of racing, being a committeeman and steward of the .Taranaki Jockey Club for 20 years. He was born in Scotland, and had lived in New Zealand for 57 years. Relative Weights: Monipere carrying 7.7, won the Burger Memorial at Kumara by six lengths from Potent carrying 8.1. At Omoto on Saturday next, Potent, assessed at 8.2, meets Monipere at. 8.0. on six pounds better terms. Potent is still in hack class, but Monipere is long out of hacks. Rebel Chief won with 8.12 at Omoto last Saturday, and was last, a long way back, with 9.6 at Kumara. He has been dropped to 9.4 for Omoto on Saturday, in the President’s Handicap, -which is still a six pounds' penalty for his victory last week. Potent assessed at 7.0 at Omoto in the Hannan Memorial on Saturday, carried 7.6 and was second to Rebel Chief, a head in front of Roy Bun, assessed at 8.0 and carrying 7.7. In the President’s Handicap at Omoto on Saturday, Roy Bun is assessed at 8.0, and Potent, at 8.2. REEFTON NOMINATIONS. Owners and trainers are finally reminded that nominations for the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting, to he held on Thursday, April 28. and Saturday, April 30, will close at 9 o-’clock tonight, with the secretary, Mr. W. Goreporter, Reefton. RACES AT RICCARTON. ARCTIC KING AND REBEL MATE. CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. The second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting was held ni fine weather. There was a good attendance. The track was slow. The tote investments amounted to £36,0231. compared with £26,240 last year, making a total for the meeting of £89,3491, as against £69,986 last year- Remaining results: — *

[special to “star,"] CHRISTCHURCH. April 19. The autumn meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, concluded to-day, was the most successful from every standpoint, since 1925. The track was in excellent order and again there was some high class racing with several very close finishes.

Won Again: Courtyard repeated his first day’s performance by again beating Flashlight in the Peerswick Hurdles, but this time he had a close call, and there was a small margin between them at the post. They raced abreast over the last half-mile, and the result. was in doubt right to the- last stride. Courtyard has made a remarkable rise to recognition since being trained by A. McMullan. who seems to have the happy knack of winning races with horses that have been almost despised. Silver Sight was a fair third, bur the others shaped poorly. Champion Colt: Defaulter only had Paper Slipper and. the two-year-old Neatherlea. to oppose - him in the Challenge Stakes,

and he earned some more easy money. He was always .in front of rite other pair, who raced neck and neck the whole way. Defaulter was never asked to gallop at his best and won with something in hand. Alter an: exciting' tpsslo the judge was unable to separate Paper liiipyior and Neatherlea. Defaulter lias now won £lB7O in stakes, a good return for the 170 guineas paid for him as a yearling; fifteen months ago.

A Smart Filly: Lady Leigh and Settlement, both trained by F. D. Jones, had the finish of the Yaldhurst Handicap to themselves, Lady Leigh scoring a decisive win. She is by Paper Money from a sister to Mincrval, whose successes included the Auckland' Cup. This was Settlement’s first race since coming to Riccarton to be trained, and he may now ihake good. Donadea. was a. fair third after acting as pacemaker for a good portion of the journey. Gillie, who was again confidently supported, was a. poor fifth.

Financiers Unlucky: Golden Chest improved on her first day’s good effort by winning the Girnci’ack Handicap, and she paid a. false price. She was, however, .probably lucky that. Finauciere did not steer a straight, course instead of boring io the outside rail. Tins filly was in front from the false rail, and looked to have the race well in hand, but Golden Chest, making a. fast run on the fence, got up to beat her in the hist stride. Cocksure did a little better than on the first day by filling third place and Passenger and Nightcalm wore next. Favourites Defeated: The Great Autumn Handicap saw tho defeat of the favourites, and produced a great finish, but only between four of the contestants, the remainder being well spread out when the post was reached. Dictate and Wild Career disputed the lead from, the narly stages, and when the latter retired in the straight. Dictate was left to carry on. Ho appeared 1 to be the Winner until Arctic King came at. him a few strides from the post, while Studley Royal, who was last over the first few furlongs, came on the scene wide out. Davolo also made a fast move on the’ outside, and a great tussle ensued. Arctic King just got up on the post to win by a head' from Studley Royal, who, still wide out on the track, separated him from Dictate. with Davolo only half a length away. Wild Career was three lengths back, well clear of the remainder headed by Sovereign l Lady. Arctic King was ridden an excellent race by S. Wilson, who piloted Pouty to victory in the Great Easter Handicap. An Easy Win: Disdain again made her- opponents in tho Autumn Nursery look very cheap. She was not first out on 1 this occasion, but after allowing Density to lead on to the course proper, she shot, to the. front, and romped home with three lengths to spare from K.ilrobe, who comfortably beat Scuffle. Night Hawk and Passaform were heads away. Good [passage whipped round when the barrier went up, and her stablo mate Gaoler followed her, neither taking any part in the. race. Both Spendthrift and 1 Density showed tho effects of their hard first day’s race in heavy going. Not Fancied:

Sparkle, who was narrowly beaten into third place on; the. first, day, was allowed to pay a big price, in; winning the Addington Handicap. She took charge a furlong from home, and ran home a decisive winner from. Wagner, who showed further improvement. Happy Night, finished fast and only just failed to get up to Wagner. Rabble, who was always prominent but novel' dangerous, was' close up next. Jolly Beggar was an interesting starter, and although never in the picture, he ran a useful race. Final Event:

Rebel Mato followed l up his good second in the Great Easter Handicap by winning the concluding event of the meeting in/ an impressive manner from Haughty Winner, who was his nearest attendant over the last furlong. Janet Gaynor was a good

third l after leading into the straight, and Paper Note and Lazybones were not far away. Alma and Brunhild again ran disappointingly. RIVEETON CONCLUDEB. TRTSOX AVINS STEEPLES. INVERCARGILL, April 19. 'The Riverton Racing Club’s Easter meeting concluded to-day in fine warm weather, the track being in excellent order. J. Prendeville, the driver of Overproof in the Ohai Trot, was lined £5 for careless driving. Tho totalisator handled £21,208/10/-to-day, compared with £16,813/10/for the third day last year, an increase of £4,395. The opening of the yearling sales to-day drew a larger attendance then usual. The occasion was more important because the catalogues included the last of Heroic’s and the first of Chatham’s and Winooka’s stock. The highest price of the day, 2300 guineas, was paid by Messrs MacKinnon and Cox, of Melbourne, for i Heroic —Trasina colt. The New Zealander, Mr. W. Hig

gins, bought a Heroic —Ashtar colt for 1000 guineas. A Heroic —White Swan colt went to Mr. F. Musgrave, of Melbourne, for 1700 guineas. Colts by Madagascar ranged to 900 guineas.

The New Zealand owner, Mr. F. Jones, bought an Excitement—Calcite colt for 220 guineas. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, Ltd., (New Zealand), bought a chestnut filly by Excitement —Ritual for 120 guineas. Ceilmond colts brought from 130 guineas to 500 guineas and Medieval Knight stock, from 100 guineas to 700 guineas. 1 Two Chatham colts realised 120 guineas each, and Brazen stock sold to GOO guineas. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. April 21, 22, 23. —N.Z. Metrop. April 30—Auckland. Answer to Correspondent: In running second in the New Zealand Cup Trial at Hutt Park in February, King's Play recorded 4.22. Graham Direct was first in 4.20 4-5. Two Seconds: Green Tanger was installed favourite in both his races at Kumara on the strength of his convincing win at Omoto, but was beaten both times by Big Nelson, to return to his supporters less than their investments. Green Tanger was well placed throughout both races, but did not impress as anything more than solid 1 , in saddle. He may repeat. Saturday’s form when produced in harness again, for he is a good beginner, and a reliable pacer.

Improved Form: Big Nelson showed a big improvement on recent form when he won a double in saddle at Kumara on Monday. He is not a generous racehorse, having shown an inclination to break for no apparent reason when in harness. At Kumara. he paced soundly all the way with the weight up. G. Withers gave him plenty of time to settle down in both races, and though lie" won at his first, outing by only a narrow margin, he was finishing faster than anything else in the race. In his second race he was taken to the front before the home turn, and won as he liked.

Stud Jottings: Tairane, dam of Lucky Jack, Trenand, Dundas Boy, and other winners, is still breeding at 25 years of age. She is now in foal to Fremont. Grace Logan, the dam of Supertax, is again in foal to Maxegin, and the hope of the owner is to breed another Free-for-All winner. Lucky Jack did a short stud season before the last New Zealand Cup, a few mares in the Hinds district being

served by him. Sarella, the dam of Rockella, produced a colt to U. Scott last season, and is again in foal to the Americanbred stallion. Nell Volo, who has been at the stud for three seasons, has not yet proved in foal, and Worthy Queen, another champion trotter, missed a season, but is now in foal to Gallant Knight. Mr. R. H. Butterick, a buyer at Mr. J. R. McKenzie’s dispersal sale, bought Peggotty in Tattersall’s for £4. He secured a Gallant Knight filly yesterday at a small figure. The two-year-old black colt by Gallant Knight from Dolores was bought by Free Holmes on behalf of Mr. L. G. King, owner of New Derby, at Mr. J. R. McKenzie’s sale.
