monthly meeting. [our own correspondent.] The Hokitika. Borough Council met on Thursday evening. Present: 3he Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry). Crs. I. A • Duff E- L. Park, A. R. Elcock, H- LMichel and E. Teichelmann. A deputation from the Westland branch of the Automobile Association consisting of Messrs H. M. Coulson, G. Anderson, W- E,- Rchards and Dr. Techelmann, waited on the Council for permission to use a portion. of Cass Square as a camping ground for motorists. — Ihe Mayor pointed out the peculiar position regarding the Square. Although the Square is vested in the Council for the people, the Council has no authority to give permission to anyone, but they would not oppose it being’ used as a campaing ground. This met with the approval of the tionThe .Abattoirs’ Manager’s report showed animals slaughtered during March: 4!) cows (2 condemned), 36 heifers, 64 bullocks, 301 sheep, 188 lambs. 8 pigs, 21 calves. Fees received £96/2/- as against £B4/11/- for the same period last year. Accounts amounting to £902/15/9 were presented and passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. From Sanitary Inspector. Department. of Health, Greymouth, regarding application from L. S. Ross and F. A. Thompson for permission to instal a joint, septic tank, stating that the Medical Officer of Health is not in favour of combined septic tanks, as combined ownership leads lo difficulties when properties change hands. The Inspector recommends the Council not to grant the permit for a combined tank.
From W. C. C. Wieblitz asking for a certificate as to his physical fitness in relation to hard work at the time l hat. he resigned from the Council's em ployment—G rant ed. From the District Engineer. New Zealand Railways, staling that his Department proposes, with the consent. cf the Council, to instal a septic tank (plan submilted) at the Hokitika Railway Statiion. and asking it the Council is agreeable to the eminent discharging from the septic tank into the Council’s drainage system and that the Health Depart mem had been asked tor their permission to the installation »f the. tank.—Referred to the Inspector. From the Westland Provincial Organisation. N-Z. Centennial, forwarding a copy of preliminary report prepared in connection with the start for the West Coast Court at the New Zealand Exhibition, opening in November, 1939, that application has been made for 15.000 feet of space, the cost of which is £712/19/-. and to complete the application a. deposit of 25 pei’ cent, is to be paid, to what end it has been decided to call up one-third cf the local bodies’ contributions. The allocation for the Hokitika Borough was £135/14/-, and the amount now due is £45/4/8. — Received and agreed to.
From the Acting Chairman of the Hokitika State School Jubilee Committee. intimating that the proposal is being considered to establish swimming baths at the Hokitika District High School, for instructing the
pupils in swimming atnd asking whether the Council could supply water, at. least once a week to till the bath, and on what terms. The swimming bath is estimated to hold 6300 gallons.-—Postponed.
Mrs A. Seebeck wrote, drawing attention to the state of the footpath and the road along the frontage of her property in Weld Street and asking that the matter receive favourable consideration.—Referred to P.WCommittee.
From 11. Broadbent and -I. McCieagh. application for formation of Hoffman Street near Hampden Street, io give access to property—Referred to P.W. Committee.
From J- A. Roberts, drawing attention to blockage of the North Belt drain, which is causing the water to back up on his section No. 8293 and also asking the Council to pipe the watercourse which runs through his section.
From Air iVI. F. Singer, making application lor a domestic water service connection 133 S Hampden Street, and Stating that the Creek through the borough reserve leading to the Livingstone Street drain is blocked with gorse and blackberries, causing his land to flood, and also asking the Council to instal a street, light at the corner of Hampden Street and the Blue Spur Road.—Resolved that the water connection be made, but the Council could not undertake the other requests.
From the Minister of Transport advising the taxi licenses in a. number of towns are being increased to a level which makes it impossible for those engaged in the business to secure a reasonable standard of living, and suggesting that if by-laws do not provide a maximum for the number of licenses to be issued for the Council to pass such a by-law in order that it may restrict the number of licenses to be issued-
From the Secretary Government Loans Board advising that the Local Government Loans Board having considered the application of the Hokitika, Borough Council for authority to utilise moneys received from the sale of wooden water mains purchased out of the drainage loan 1904-1910 of £ll,OOO, Drainage Loan 1909/10 £5,500, and the Drainage Loan, 1910, £2,000, and' credited or to be crtedited to a separate account under Section 20 of the Finance Act, 19.34, hereby approves of the use of such moneys from time to time credited to the separate account under the said section 20 for the purpose of renewing or extending any water reticulation mains not provided for by the Water Supply Loan, 1930, of £lB,OOO. From the Westland Hospital Board applying for lease of a borough reserve in Sewell Street.—Granted, at 5 per cent, of unimproved value.
