BULLER’S NEW SCHOOL

EDUCATION BOARD’S PROGRAMME An extensive school building programme in the Buller district has been adopted by the Nelson Education Board. It is proposed to erect two new, up-to-date schools in Westport, replacing the old school facing Palmerston Street, which has been used for many years. These schools will be erected at the north and south ends of the town for the greater convenience of the pupils. The Government has already sanctioned a grant for a new school at Granity. This building will also occupy a new and wore central site. At Denniston a commodious building will replace the two structures which housed the school children of Denniston and Burnett’s Face. Excavation work has already begun on the central site at Denniston.

The board at its monthly meeting decided to apply to the Education Department for a grant for a new school building at Seddonville. Other districts are also being catered for, and reporting on his visit to Alexander River, the chairman (Hon. W. H. McIntyre) recommended that an urgent application be made to the Education Department for a new school there. The board adopted this recommendation and the architect was instructed to prepare plans. Extensive improvements to other school buildings and grounds were also considered by the board. A grant was made for clearing the Granity School site, £l2 was granted towards tar sealing the playing area at Owen Junction, and the Inangahua committee was granted £6 towards concreting the floor of the shelter shed. The chairman’s recommendation that part of the Ikamatua School site be disposed of and that the school outbuildings be duplicated owing to the increased roll, was adopted. A complaint that school matters at Punakaiki were unsatisfactory was made by the chairman, who said the school committee had not been functioning properly since the last meeting of householders. The grounds needed improving and transport of children to the school required investigation. He said that he intended to meet the new school committee very soon after the election on May 2.
