The following petroleum prospecting licences have been granted: —Nine licences, covering a. total area, of approximately 1355 square miles in southern Hawke’s Bay, to the Shell Company; five licences, covering approximately 1000 square miles in Taranaki. to the New Zealand Petroleum Company, Ltd. CHILD’S BODY FOUND. DARGAVILLE, April 16. The body of a young child was found on the bank of the northern Wairoa River, in the vicinity of Chadwick's ferry slip, Aratapu. The body was fully clothed, and was in the last stages of decomposition. An inquest was opened this morning. The police have no reports of a missing child. PARMER ASSAULTED CHRISTCHURCH, April 15. A man was arrested in Christchurch to-day, and will be charged in the Magistrate’s Court, with the assault on Tuesday evening on David James McIntyre, a farmer of more than 70 years of age. who resides at Digby’s Bridge, near Ashburton. The inquiries leading to the arrest were made by DetectiveSergeant J. McClung, of the Central Police Station, Christchurch, and Constable E. Myers of the Ashburton police. SOUTHLAND POWER SUPPLY INVERCARGILL, April 15. There is no improvement in the position at Monowai, the source of Southland’s electric power, where the lake is falling three-quarters of an inch a day. The capacity of the plant is now reduced to slightly below half of normal. and a comprehensive scheme of rationing has been announced for country districts, designed to give a minimum of inconvenience to dairy farmers, who will be allowed power for milking-machines, ft is expected that if there is no improvement in the situation by Tuesday the private use of power will be more severely restricted.

AIR FORCE PHOTOGRAPHY WELLINGTON, April 15

The appointment of Flight Lieutenant Donald W. Baird to the Royal New Zealand Air Force for photographic duties is announced by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones). Flight Lieutenant. Baird went to England in 1931 on an appointment to a. short service commission in the Royal Air Force, which he completed in 1937, since when ho has been employed as a flying instructor in England. Before returning to New Zealand Flight Lieutenant Baird will undergo a special three months’ course at the Royal Air Force school of photography at Farnborough. He is expected to arrive in the Dominion in August. He will be stationed at. the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Hobsonville, where an air survey flight will be formed, the chief duties of which will be air photography in the topographical survey of New Zealand which the Government has undertaken.
