PROFESSIONAL TOURNEY

INVERCARGILL, February 11.

The annual tournament of the Professional Golfers’ Association was begun on the Invercargill Golf Club’s links at Otatara to-day in ideal weather. The course, which measures 6000 yards was, on account of a long spell Of dry weather, playing short, long drives getting from 280 to 320 and 330 yards from the tee. When playing with a light south-easterly breeze, several drove the length of the tenth green (286 yards), and at the second green, (339 yards), A. Guy was slightly past the green with his drive.

In the morning, which was hot and calm, a stableford handicap was played, and in the afternoon, which was a trifle cooler, a bogej 7 handicap was decided. The net. scores in the two rounds counted for the Bromford Cup. To-morrow, the first and second rounds of the Southland Provincial Professional Championship will be decided, and the following day the third and fourth rounds are to be played. The scores this morning were very good, including three 70’s and three 71’s, but in the afternoon, the majority of the competitors dropped up to five and six strokes on the hills. The morning round’s most impressive golf was played by B. J. Smith, jnr. (Invercargill), who had two rounds of 71; A. Murray (Auckland) who had 71 and 72; A. Guy (Dannevirke) who went round in 70, and 73; and E. S. Douglas (Dunedin), whose scores were 74 and 70. Douglas began by duffing his first drive, but played brilliantly for the next 16 holes. At the last, he took 5 against, par 4. The best, cards to-day were: — Stableford Handicap.—l-1. R. Blair (Christchurch) 41, T. S. Galloway (Auckland) 41, J- Lambie (Hastings) 41, A. Guy (Dannevirke) 40. C. C. Clements (Christchurch) 40. B. J. Smith, junr. (Invercargill) 39, A. Murray (Auckland) 39, J. Forrest (Christchurch) 38, W. Alborn 38. The tie was decided on the afternoon round. Lambie being the winner.
