TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME February 12—Dunedin. February 12 —Egmont. February 12 —Poverty Bay. February 12, 14 —Rotorua. February 18, 19 —Winton. February 19 —TolagaBay. February 19, 21 —Waikato. February 19, 21 —Woodville. February 24, 26 —Wanganui. February 25, 26—Westland. February 25, 26 —Gore. February 26 —Waiapu. February 26, 28 —Te Aroha, Matamata Meeting: The Matamata Racing Club, which had! to abandon its meeting on Saturday last owing to bad weather, has been granted Saturday. April 2. as the date for the meeting. Reported: It is stated that the Straight Course — Narative gelding sold at the dispersal sale of the late Mr W. Crossan s stock at 40 guineas has been sold to an Australian buyer at 1000 guineas' Resinous Dead: The Limond —Amyrin horse Resinous was found dead in a paddock this week. He had few opportunities of proving himself at the stud, his one success being Naughty Marietta, who is certainly endowed with stamina. Better To-morrow: Davolo was at a big price in the Dunedin Cup yesterday, and he made a bold showing in the straight. The race would no doubt benefit him. and he. may be able to repeat his effort of 12 months ago of winning the big race on the second day. Clessanior: The Lackham gelding Clessanior is earning the reputation of a secondday horse. His win at New Plymouth on Saturday last, marked the fourth occasion in recent months in which he had won on the second day of a meeting after failing to impress at his first appearance. Ponty’s Broken Gear: The supporters of Pouty were very unfortunate in not getting a run for their enterprise in yesterday's Dunedin Cup. An inquiry into nis being pulled up two furlongs after the start, was held, and it was decided, after inspecting the broken stirrup leather, practically a new one, that there was nothing to indicate that the gear was faulty when the horse was saddled up.

Promising Novice: Valimeen showed her ability’ when, in making her initial appearance, the Vaals, —Limeen filly ran a creditable fourth to Calorie, Hot Box and Sir Robin in the Calliope Handicap at Ellerslie. She was not well placed early, and came home strongly, her effort being impressive. If all goes well, Valimeen should not. be long in gaining her first success. Consistent Galloper:

After being off the scene for several months Maori Song is due to mke a reappearance in the Tourist Handicap al the Rotoru,a meeting to-morrow. With five wins to his credit over sprint distances since last June, this gelding’s form has been consistent, and it the going happens to be easy at Rotorua he can be relied on to put up a creditable showing.

Comparisons: In the Storey Memorial, the main event at the Waikato meeting, the three-year-old Courtcraft litis been allotted 9-1. 71b above the Melbourne Cup winner Wotan. Cuddle is topweight with 9-0. 161 b above Wotan. In Australia. Wotan would get relatively ten or twelve pounds more, but that is not to say that he is a good thing at Te Rapa.

Recommissioned: Rebel Lad and Parakino, members of D. Cotton’s team which have been off the scene through injuries, are back on the track again, at Riccarton, fit and ready to undergo preparation. Cotton is also taking Kinnoull along quietly. He was too big in condition to be raced at the Summer meeting at Riccarton, but he should be a lit horse for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps.

Play On: Play On, w*ho scored so attractively in the. Hauraki Plate at the Takapuna meeting after his unlucky defeat on the opening day of that fixture, looks bright and well after his northern trip, but the Bulls trainer. A. E. Neale, will not require him to race for 'a little while yet. The Philamor three-year-old, who was purchased by Mr Maurice Millar at a price reported to be about four figures, is yet green, but he is a quality colt who should repay being brought along quietly.

A Family Disability: In inability to handle, the soft going at New Plymouth on Saturday last, the two-year-old filly Sudan was only maintaining the characteristic of her granddam, Desert. Gold. Desert Gold was no use except, on top ot the ground, and though there may be exceptions in the family, Sudan resembles her so much that it was hardly surprising that she failed under the conditions. Sudan’s climbing action in the preliminaries prepared close observers for her failure.

Dunedin Cup Winner: Studley Royal, winner of the Dunedin Cup, yesterday, gave a suggestion of stamina by winning over a mile and a-quarter at the Hororata meeting, and also by a second to Conveyor in the High-weight Handicap run at TTentham. He is a four-year-old gelding by Paper Money from Red Queen, by AM Red —Lady Victoria, by Pilgrim’s Progress—Lady Lillian, by Phaeton from Lady Zetland. There is plenty of stamina on life dam’s side, as Lady Zetland and Royal Star, two New Zealand Cup winners, are closely related and another indication of stamina cemes from Lady Lillian.

Death of Captain Crawford: Cabled advice has been received by Mr. H. R. Sellers (secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference) that Captain J. Crawford, M.R.C.V.S., one of the directors of the British Livestock Agency, Ltd., London, was killed instantly in a. motor car accident at. Capetown, last week. Captain Crawford on a world tour, paid a. visit to Now Zealand two years, ago, and visited the principal thoroughbred studs, a number of which house stallions and mares purchased through his agency. During his visit to New Zealand he arranged for the purchase of the mare

Maypay, who was sent to America tn September last and whose colt foal was sold on his behalf at last month s sales.

Half-Brother to Mobile: Roseman, winner of the Post Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, and a winner again at Wingatui yesterday, hails from an excellent winning family, as he is no other than a halfbrother to Mobile and closely related maternally to Ravenna, dam of Travenna, Ventrac, etc., and to Overdrawn and Alma. His only previous success war at Wyndham last year.

Now four years old, Roseman is a chestnut gelding by Rosenor (sire of Fonty, etc.) from the Sunny Lake—i Drcski mare Bonnie Lake, who was a. ■ half-sister to Ravenna, and Overi drawn. He was bred by Mr R. RMcDonald, and is being raced by the Mosgiel trainer D. J. McDonald, who also raced Mobile and who has recently had considerable success with Janet Gaynor. RACING AT WINGATUI. DUNSTAN WINS STAKES. DUNEDIN. February 10. Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting opened to-day in brilliant sunshine. The track was fast. The tote handled £19,961 10/-, compared with £16,791 last. year. NOTES ON THE RACING. MASTER ANOMALY’S HURDLES. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] DUNEDIN, February 10. Master Anomaly outclassed the field for the Warrington Hurdles. He went to the front early, and was always a winner. The only interest in the race was a tussle for second money, Superex finishing with a late run to beat Delrain in the last few strides. Top Rank, the favourite, was a poor fourth, in front of Last Link. Surprise Victory: The Trial Handicap resulted in a surprise victory for Spanish Lad. one of F. Shaw’s team. He was well back until the straight was reached, where he made a fast move, and, tackling I.ochie River, who had been the pacemaker throughout, one hundred yards from the post, beat him decisively. Pink Del was a close third, with a gap to Atalanta Lass, Auctor and Mulatto. The last-named was a staunch favourite, but failed badly on the hard ground, and was always in a rear position. Easiest for Some Time: Roy Bun had one of the easiest wins seen at Wingatui for some time, in the Berwick Handicap. He had four horses in front of him. entering the straight, but less than a furlgng from the post, ire had the pacemakers, Valmarch and Combat, beaten, and drawing away won without the slightest pressure being necessary. Mutus finished fast, but just failed to get up to Valmarch for second money. Combat was a length away, and was followed by Lumiere and Nightwings. , Stratosphere and Great Memory dwelt on the mark, and were always in the rear. Favourites Beaten: Investors received a setback, when Paper Slipper and Alma were beaten in the Publicans’ Handicap. They were both slow away ,and although Alma worked her way into a close third place. Paper Slipper was always in trouble near the rear. Bay Duke and Silver Sail entered the straight abreast, and the former appeared to be a winner until Top Row klrew up to him one hundred yards from the post, with Alma also making a run. Top Row soon had Bay Duke’s measure, and won with something in I hand from Bay Duke, who just held off Alma. Silver Sail, Janet Gaynor and Paper Slipper followed. Studley Royal’s Cup: The field for the Dunedin Cup attracted a good pool, although speculation was confined mostly to four horses. A good start was effected and the first to show out when the field had settled down were Pink Robe, Trivet, Studley Royal, Silver Streak, Made Money, • and Hanlon. Ponty was also prominent for the first ttvo furlongs, but. had to be pulled' up owing to his 1 rider losing a. stirrup iron. I Pink Robe carried on as pacemaker, 'through the back stretch, and was I first into the straight from Studley | Royal, Trivet, High Glee, Galleon, Sillver Streak, and Davolo. Studley i Royal »soon took charge from Pink Robe, and Davolo, Galleon, High’ Glee land Silver Streak were all handy at the distance. Galleon then ran up to ! Studley Royal, and. the. pair had an exciting set-to, the verdict going to Studley Royal by a short head. Davolo was four lengths away, a length in front of Pink Rohe, with Silver Streak, High Glee, and Salient Knight I next, and the remainder strung out down the track. The time, 2.30 1-5, | was a course record beating Silver | Ring’s 2.30 2-5 made two years ago. 'Silver Ring carried 10.4 on that, occasion. Champagne Stakes: The contest for the- Champagne Stakes was; robbed of much interest by the failure of Good Passage to line up, and. when the field, was ultimate.ly sent away without her, Raeburn > and Ortyx were badly left. Dunstan

and Netherlea quickly assumed command from Passaform and Atua Rere, and at the end of a furlong, Ortyx ranged alongside Passaform. Dunstan was first into the straight from Netherlea, Ortyx, Passaform and Raeburn. All these were bunched at the distance, and a great finish ensued, Dunstan holding on to gain a head verdict from Passaform, with Netherlea a neck away, a length in front of Ortyx, and Raeburn. The remainder were well beaten off. Raeburn was unlucky, as, in spite of his poor getaway, he would have, been dangerous if he had, not ben blocked by the leader,si when nearing home. Favourite Wins Well:

Song Boy essayed to win the Stewards’ Handicap, from end to end, and looked likely, when he was well clear of the. favourite, Good Sun a furlong from home, but he then commenced to weaken, and Good Sun, finishing very solidly, got up to beat him in the last few strides. Queen Dorothy was a fair third, a length in front of Daring Deed. Roseman Again! There were several withdrawals from the concluding event, and of the four starters, Paladino was sent out a pronounced favourite. Roseman wont into the lead early from Barley Almond, Paladino, and Balmenter, and was two lengths in front of Barley Almond, and Paladino together. entering the straight. Barley Almond, did not carry on, and Paladino set off after Roseman, and gradually drew alongside him, but Roseman hung on for a head victory. Barley Almond was a moderate third, three lengths in front of Balmenter. RACES AT GISBORNE. GOULSBRO’S SUCCESSES. GISBORNE. February 10. The Poverty Bay Turf Club held its first day's races to-day in misty rain. The track was in good order and fast. The outstanding feature was the riding of C. Trotting \ MEETINGS TO COME “ . February 12 —Canterbury Park. February 12, 16—Auckland. February 19—New Brighton. February 26—Wairarapa. Speeding Up: King's Play is credited with going the last half-mile of the Dominion Handicap inside 1.2. He won in 4.34 1-5. In the next race the trotter. Walter Wrack. Won in 4.34 4-5. Rehandicapped: Chili Bean, as the result of his success at Hutt Park,- has been penalised in the Railway Handicap tomorrow, and is now on 60yds. Change of Stables: F. J. Smith disposed of Myrtle Oro after the Wellington meeting, but in her ‘place he took back with him D. F. Berkett’s two horses, Charlie Chan and Wrackless. Both are useful, and will find classes to suit them in Auckland. A Classic Race: A good deal of interest is being taken in the Great Northern Derby, which will be decided at Auckland tomorrow, and with three of the best, of their age .in Refund, Horse Power, and Sandusiky engaged, the race should be full of interest.

A. Holmes at Epsom: A. Holmes went on from Wellington to Auckland with Ace Pot and the two-vear-old Taiki. by Grattan moyalBecky Logan, and therefore a _ halfbrother to Graham Direct. He is engaged in the North Island Challenge Stakes to be decided on the second day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting. The early favourite for this race is Contender, owned and trained by J. T. Paul.

Racing' Consistently: The aged' trotter Gold Kip is working takingly at Epsom of late, and he should have good prospects in. the Trial Handicap to-morrow. In his last five starts he has been in the money on four occasions, and his tu,rn cannot be far off. He is fairly solid as trotters go, and in all probability lie will be taken to the front from the outset.

A Big Field: For the Waiheke Handicap, to be decided at Auckland to-morrow, Myrtle Oro and Cloverdale have been scratched, and this will obviate the necessity of running the race in divisions. The draw for positions will have some influence on the resultMany of the novices have gained places this season, including L **ay Potts, Wall Street, Forest Jewel Elsie Hamlyn, Jewel Crest, John s Las . Sewana, Winhisway, and Tommy McElwyn. Others with chances are Ratepaver, Isabella Pointer, Kete Kura. Gipsy Light, and Transwell.

Working Satisfactorily: Sandusky had given every satisfaction in his latest training essays and the black gelding should be right at 1 his best for his engagement in the Great Northern Derby. He has not been in work long, but has made rapid strides of late, and is looking a picture cf health. Sandusky proved himself one of the leading three-year-olds in the Dominion last year, and although he did not succeed in winning any of the classics he was not disgraced in any of his outings. He has filled out a great deal in the interim, and may be his turn will come in the blue: riband at Epsom. At any rate, he should be one of the leaders throughout. He will be driven by F. J. Smith, who annexed the Derby in 1933 with Chancellor- J

CANTERBURY PARK MEETING. TO-MORROW’S FIELDS REVIEWED. [SPECIAL to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH. February 11. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club's meeting, to be held at Addington tomorrow. has drawn very good acceptances, 'and with, every prospect of fine weather the racing should be full of interest. The win and place system of betting will be in operation. 12.15. Progressive Handicap. Unhoppled trotters. 3.40 class. One mile and ahalf: Gaynor, Ohinemutu scr.. Axiom. Sphinx 12; Esther, Triangle 24; Fair Voyage. Gay Crusader 36; Silk Coat. 48: Prince Harvester. Survivor 60. The lield engaged in the Progressive Handicap includes several improvers. Axiom, who recently went, into G. McKendry’s stable, has improved a good deal, and he may be one of the first fancies. Esther was. backed and beaten in Wellington last week, and the best may be Prince Harvester, Survivor and Fair Voyage. 12.55.

Telegraph Handicap. 2.16 class. One mile:—Celebrity. Colonel Gratian, Lone Derby. Racketeer. Shrewdie, Social Pest, Superior Rank, Whippet, Full Hand scr.. Ginger Jack 12. Colonel Grattan has shown his ability more trail once during the past few mouths, and in the expert hands of E. (.' McDermott he may be 100 good for those opposed to him in the Telegraph Handicap. Celebrity and Superior Rank should offer the strongest opposition, and of this pair the latter may be preferred. He. is due for another victory, for lie is the making of a. high grade pacer. Rackateer is something of a mystery horse, with good and bad form marking his displays. Social Pest, through unsoundness, has been off the scene for some time, while Whippet, has little ot late to recommend him. Full Hand is coming back to form, and Ginger Jack, on the short limit of 12 yards, mnst be given a royal chance. In his best form he is a. very speedy pacer. The favourites on the totalisator may be Colonel Grattan, Ginger Jack and Superior Rank. 1.40.

Paparua Handicap, 4.29 class. Two miles:—Aide de Camp scr., Big Author, Gallant Knight, Gunfire, Llewellyn's Pride, Rongomai 12, Evicus 48.

The good stake of £5OO for a 4.29 class race has not drawn the acceptances expected, but apparently owners are reserving their cracks for the Inter-Dominion Championships, to be hold in April. Evicus. who is set to give away 48 yards, is the champion of Hie field, but her form has been poor. Rongomai has shown her ability over two miles, and in a solid race she will be on hand from start, to finish. Llewellyn’s Pride will need rhe race run to suit him, and Gunfire will prefer a. soft track. Gallant Knight, and Big Author, on 12 yards, may prove the hardest to beat. The former has been racing consistenly enough without being able to collect the first prize, but he will be one of the favourites this time. Big Author does not always leave the mark correctly, but on his day ho is a stayer, and his nomination for the Inter-Dominion Championships reflects the opinion of his owner and trainer. Aide de Camp is one of the vastly improved horses in training, anil he is 'a proved stayer and sprinter. One of the smallest fields of the day may provide the best race,, and Big Author, Gallant. Knight, and Aide de Camp mav be the public fancies. 2.20.

Pioneer Handicap, 2.54 class. One mile i and a quarter.—-Agility, Cruiser, Dark Hazard. Eastern Prince. Fay Rey, Icevus. Olive King, Oversight, Reno, Snowy de Oro, Waitaki Power, Wynan scr.; Donald Dhu, Full Hand, Pola Negri, Policy, Reylena 12; Bing Crosby 24.

Icevus has been nominated for the Inter-Dominion Championships, and if he is to take his place in the field he should give some indications of his form in the Pioneer Handicap, a 2.54 class mile and a quarter race. He raced well enough at Greymouth and Forbury .Park to suggest that he has a chance this time. Cruiser was un-

lucky to be beaten at Timaru, whilei Olive King. Waitaki Power. Wynan, Donald Dhu, Pola Negri and Policy are all public favourites. The race will be between improving pacers. The speed will be on from the start, and expert driving may find Icevus, Cruiser and Waitaki Power in the places. 3.5. Advance Handicap, 3.25 class. One mile and a. half. —Ginger Jack, Gloriett.a scr.: Cantata. Golden Cross, Toorak 12; Great Chenault, Navy Blue 24. Ginger Jack will have his second chance in the. Advance Handicap, and a small field should enable him to beat Toorak and Golden Cross. 3.45. Strowan Handicap. Unhoppled trotters. 4.43 class. Two miles: —Aristotle. Helen’s: Bay scr.: Kippagh, Meadow King .12; Fifa 24: Ganton. Garner 36; Captain Bolt 48; Bittersweet 60; Writer 72. The. comparatively long limit of 72 yards separates the field in the Strowan Handicap, but if Captain Bolt could be depended upon to trot solidly few would look’ further for the winner? He lias his weakness, however. and Ganton and Bittersweet may keep him up to the mark. With atmospheric conditions favourable, and the race run to suit her. Bittersweet may prove the best of the field. 4.25. Harewood Handicap. 3.33 class.. One mile and a half.—Cruiser, Effie 'Parrish. Ivy Peterson, Marlene. Zincali scr.; Dundee, Golden Moness 12; Moana Tama 24. Marlene is one of C. .S. Donald s brilliant young pacers, but luck has been all against her in her efforts to date. Steel, of Greymouth. 5.10. Au Revoir Handicap, 2.45 class. One mile and a. quarter.—Agile, Big Author, Double Great, Gunfire, Iraq, Morello, Raydus, Renown’s Best, Rongomai scr.; Llewellyns Pride 12, Evicus, Guy Junior 24. Features of the Epsom trials to-day" were the efforts of the Great Northern Derby horses, Horse Power and Refund, and the Challenge Stakes candidates, Taiki and Worthy Empress. who were worked on the outside of the course proper. Horse Power, who ran his last half mile in 1.8, did better than Refund, while the two-year-olds impressed by finishing together in 1.11. On the dirt track, which was in good order, Petite Jewel, 1.4 3-5, took the honours, closely followed by Gay Sistei\ Noble Prince, Star Pronto, and Ace Pot, 1.5, Lucky Love and Frank Best, 1.6, and Bedford, Fisher, and Kewpie’s Crest, x.G 3-5. Ace Pot failed to give Vanora five seconds in 10 furlongs, but he went 2.48, the latter showing 2.52. Noble Prince made a break in the straight when going fast past Fisher and Kewpie’s Queen, Fisher winning narrowly in 3.32 3-5 for a mile and ahalf, Noble Prince doing 3.27 3-5, and Kewpie’s Queen 3.33. The three-year-old trotter, Mah Jong, created a. good impression by beating Braemar in 3.42 3-5 over a mile and a-half, anu trotting the last half-mile in 1.9 3-5.

Gay Sister just shaded Petite Jewel in 3.33 for a mile and a-half, but the latter sprinted 1.4 3-5 over the last half-mile.

The speedy Agnes Bingen ran a mile in 2.12, the first half in 1.5, and the next quarter in 31, but she had had enough at the finish. Lucky Love, in saddle, practically jogged the first half of a mile, but came home well in 1.6. Star Pronto worked itvo miles in 4.42. the last, mile in 2.15, and the last half in 1.5.

Jewel Crest ran a mile and a-half in 3.31. a fine effort for a maiden pacer, and Dick Redmond trotted a mile and a-half in 3.38. Blue Crest, Bedford, Kewpie’s Crest, and Kewpie’s Triumph had a great tussle in the. final stage of a mile and a-half, Bedford just reaching the front in 3.35.
