CYCLING

LAST EVENING’S RESULTS. Increased, interest is being taken in the. evening cycling meetings conducted by the Greymouth Cycling Club, and there was a good attendance of competitors and the public at Victoria. Park last evening, when an interesting programme was run off. The track was in splendid order and overhead conditions also favoured the riders, who put up fast times. Further improvement was shown by the junior division, who cut the half-mile out in 1.7 2-5, or a second' faster than in their previous race. F. Shrives was the most successful junior, with a win and. a third, in big fields, while in the senior division, D. Clarke was the most consistent place-getter. D. Morland showed, outstanding sprinting ability in taking the major placing throughout the teams’ race. The results were: — Junior Half-mile: N. Hopkins (80yds) 1; K. Fisher (15) 2; F. Shrives (GO) J. Twelve started. Time 1.7 2-5. Hopkins won easily by eight lengths, after leading almost throughout. Fisher came fast round the home bend, but could not sustain his dash and was only a length ahead of Shrives at the finish.

Senior Mile: D. Clarke (120) 1; P. Keating (120) 2, D. Morland (scr.) 3. Also started: P. Duffy (scr.), J. Archer, M. Malone (70), A. Bennett (120), R. Mclntyre, R. Seebeck (140). Won by; three-quarters of a length, five lengths. No time was taken. Keating and Clarke set a hot, pace from the start, and although the scratch men made a big effort over the final quarter, they failed to overhaul the leaders.

Junior Mile: F. Shrives (120) 1, D. Grenfell (120) 2, R. Eel! (200) 3. Ten started. Won by half, a wheel, four lengths. Time 2min 26 3-ssecs. There was an exciting sprint for first place, Shrives just holding off Grenfell’s challenge. As the field passed the winning post, D. McGirr fell heavily, but escaped with minor bruising. Half-mile Match Race; A. Quartermain defeated H. Becker. Time 1.13. Quartermain made the pace- from the start and held off a strong challenge by Becker in the straight, to -win by half a length. Three-mile Senior: A. Bennett (280) 1, D. Clarke (280) 2; R. Mclntyre (320) 3. Also started: P. Duffy, D. Morland (scr.), M. Malone, J. Archer (180). Won by three lengths, threequarters of a. length. Time 7min 25 secs. The- hackmarkers could make no impression on the limit division, who had the race to themselves, Bennett coming away- in the straight to win easily. Teams’ Race (two miles). —Morland, Malone, and Bennett drew with Duffy, Clarke, and Archer. Morland won each of the four sprints, but Duffy and Clarke shared the minor placings. Time smin 41secs.
