CAR GOES OVER BANK

WOMAN KILLED

CHRISTCHURCH, January 4. One person killed and several others injured, two seriously, when a seven-seater motor-car went off the main Christchurch-Akaroa road at the Barry’s Bay Hill near Duvauchelle, and somersaulted! about 50 feet down the 'slope to the bottom of the valley. The accident occurred some time after 7 o’clock last evening. Killed: Gladys Wilson, aged 34, single, of 15 Randolph Street, Woolston, very severe head injuries, and thought to have died almost instantaneously. Injured: —Emma Wilson. married, and mother of Gladys Wilson, of Randolph Street, Woolston, severe head injuries and shock. Serious. Amy Horne, married, of 44 Burlington Street, Sydenham, head injuries, and shock. Serious. Emily Wilson, single, sister of Gladys Wilson, injuries to back. Satisfactory. Clarence George Nicholas, journeyman butcher, of 11 Randolph Street, and driver of the car, cutd and abrasions. Treated as. an outpatient and discharged. Verna Nicholas, wife of tlie driver of the car, shock and abrasions. Treated as an outpatient and discharged. There were also two young children in the car, one of whom suffered a broken arm.

The car was; travelling towards Christchurch, and after leaving Duvauchelle had begun, to climb Barry’s hill. The car- left the road, and turned over, rolling down the slope in somersaults, till it came to rest in a creek bed some 50 feet below the road. The car was hopelessly smashed. Word was sent to Christchurch as soon as possible, and an ambulance wasi sent out. It was only with the greatest difficulty that the ambulance men, with the help of the police from Akaroa and other assistance, managed to bring the injured persons up the steep slope to the ambulance. The injured persons were brought into the Christchurch Public Hospital by the ambulance, where they arrived at 11.35 p.m. Early this morning there was no change in the condition of Mrs Wilson or Mrs Horne.

H. P. HAMPSON DIES

REEFTON, January 4

The victim of the accident on New Year’s morning on the Reefton-Grey road, Hugh Paul Hampson, died at In■angahua Hospital, this morning. The late Mr. Hampson, who was an employee of the Public Works Department, was 43 years of age, a native of Reeefton, and he had resided in the district all his life. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Hampson, of Reefton, three brothers, Messrs. Frank (Reefton), Janies (Auckland), and Thomas (Masterton), also three sisters, Mesdames • Dooham (Wellington), Cereseto (Brazil) and Miss Agnes Hampson (Reefton). The funeral takes place on Thursday.

GIRL UNCONSCIOUS

FOXTON, January 3

A thirteen year old girl, named Enes Lumsden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs; J. Lumsden, Foxton Beach, was found unconscious in some poplars at the rear of a section near the river front at a late hour last night by some residents, who were attracted by hearing a snoring noise. A doctor and the police were called, and the girl was removed to the hospital.

PRISONER’S DEATH

NAPIER, January 4.

A prisoner taken into custody last evening, Edward Frank .O’Neill, 54. was found at 11 p.m., dead, with his socks knotted round his neck.

He was to appear in Court, this morning, on a charge of assaulting a young girl.

CONSTABLE’S FUNERAL

DUNEDIN, January 3

About 70 members of the Dunedin Police Force paraded at the Police Hospital to-night and escorted the body of Constable James Butler back to the Central Police Station. Constable Butler died on Sunday morning from the effect of kicks suffered when helping to arrest a drunken man last week. The coffin was dispatched north to-night for Waipukurau, where Constable Butler previously resided, and where the burial will take place.
