MINION-WIDE RACING

■MEW YEAR’S DAY FIELDS ■OMOTO CARD REVIEWED and trotting enthusiasts will have no less than nine meetiws to occupy their attention to-morrow (New Year’s Day). Sevenwf these fixtures will be continued on Monday, while the Oamami and Southland Clubs will also race on Monday. The conclusion! of the Auckland Racing Club’s midsummer meeting, and the Canterbury Park Trots will be the principal outside attractions for West Coasters, whose first concern will no doubt be the Greymouth D Jockey Club’s Summer meeting at the Omoto racecourse, opening to* & morrow, and concluding on Monday. jj|LThe single pool system of betting will be in use at all meetings, the Canterbury Park Trots, the Wyndham R.C. meeting, the and Oamaru meetings.

OMOTO TO-MORROW. ’ Whe FIELDS REVIEWED. Greymouth Jockey Club’s Sum|||||Mieeting, opening at Omoto to-mor-Year’s Day) am’ concluding will continue the West BBJRj circuit opened at Hokitika on The acceptances for the meeting are good, and promise excellent racing. They total 93, an average Of at least 11 a race, so thatsplendid fields, with a number of fresh hordes not seen out at the Westland fixture, can be promised patrons. The course is . in first-class order, and the appointments, as usual, will be all that can be desired. The usual suitable I

1235 7ICE STAKES, five and a-half furlongs.

field of fifteen is carded Novice Stakes, and if all go to ■H|M)st, there is material here for a BMK*ace. ' .Bright Prospect, who Avon. - jß'iden race at Hokitika, heads the with 9.6, and the'.Weathervane SKlding can be expected to run another |Hod race. Clubman Avas-made fa-Unirita-in the corresponding race at gMokitika, on the strength of‘brilliant work at Riccarton, but he failed ■o handle the turns, and ran a disappointing race. He may improve at ■jpioto. Necessary has shown some and Patuma ran a useful third Kt Hokitika, but the pick of the field Kooks to be Glenacrc?. He was beaten ■into second place by a neck by Bright ■Prospect at Hokitika, and now meets ■ the Weathervane gelding on 10 pounds ■ better terms.. Fresh horses in the ■ field are Culverden (Shambles—Heath ■ Gass), an Omoto-trained gelding who I has hardly shown enough 'speed to win I over such a short journey; Perseverl ance (Shambles—Silver Thread), who I failed at his only public appearance, at I Ashburton; Necessary (Martarma — I Necessity), who raced at the Nqw I Zealand Cup meeting without success.; I Gayspear, who has been found wanting many times; Adieux, Day Mist and - Gallant Prince. Day Mist may be the pick of the newcomers, but form suggests: GLENACRE BRIGHT PROSPECT PATUMA

1.15 BOROUGH HANDICAP, 2.27 class,

■ Thirteen pacers, with, eleven off the front, are set down to contest the Borough Trot, of one mile. Kate Bingen and Silver Letitia have the best form of those off the front, and Kate Bingen, a great beginner and a smart sprinter, must be given a fine chance of breaking her maiden status. Free Author and Worthy Lad were both winners at Westport, and Free Author has previously raced well on the grass at Omoto. Kate Bingen’s two places at Reefton will not be forgotten, and the public may prefer: KATE BINGEN FREE AUTHOR WORTHY LAD 1-55 COUNTY HACK HANDICAP, one

The mile hack promises a splendid race with no less than thirteen acceptors. Roy Bun, Potent, Drink Up, Windward and Owlsgleam were all in places, with Roy Bun and Drink Up I’ winners, in similar races, at Hokitika, i Roy Bun beat Windward by a. length ; and a half at Hokitika over similar I ground, and even at a difference of two pounds, with Roy Bun at 9.4, he should boat Windward again, but Windward should again account for Owlsgleam. - Drink Up easily beat Potent, though k only by half a length at Hokitika, over fr seven furlongs, and now meets the I Omototrained gelding on six pounds F worse terms over an extra furlong, I which.should suit Potent. Gold Boy, Malvasia, Gas Mask and Bit o’ Bine (_ did not look, like winning at Hokitika, p but Elmarch should run a good race, as b he was finishing on over seven furlongs at Hokitika. Lisnacree and'Polistina did not race at the Westland meeting, but neither has revealed form enough .yi-v to upset this field. Drink Up may be i ' better placed later in the day over seven furlongs. In a good betting race, the favourites may be: ROY BUN POTENT WINDWARD

2.35 GREYMOUTH CUP, one and a-quarter

Linguist, winner of the Westland Handicap, and one of the favoured ones

among the lighter-weighted division in the New Zealand Cup, heads the list of nine acceptors in the Greymouth Cup. She beat Rebel Chief easily at Hokitika at a difference of six pounds in her favour, and it is in her favour that she has form up to ten furlongs, while Rebel Chief is more at home over a shorter journey. Linguist won so convincingly at Hokitika, as to suggest her beating Rebel Chief, Monipere and Heloise again, with Rebel Chief her most dangerous opponent of that trio. Wino has had nine starts this season without a place, and has done nothing to suggest that the 1936 Winter Cup winner is at his besL Monipere and Land Raid both looked in need of the gallop at Hokitika, but on revealed form should both be held safe by the top-weights, though Land Raid-’'’.. victory last year in the corres,. .udlng race will not be forgotten. Tunneller raced well enough at Hokitika to suggest an early return to the winning list, and he may be the one to surprise, though he is not reliable at the barrier. Waitaka is a bold, free galloper, who won in fine style over seven furlongs at Hokitika, and he may be found taking a prominent role. Unsoundness has been his trouble. Fiord has run two seconds and a third this term, one second at Banks Peninsula, separating Last Refrain and Argentic, with Cerne Abbas and Queen of Song also in the field, being most impressive. His turn is due. In a good betting race, the public may’prefer: LINGUIST - FIORD WAITAKA 3.15 PAROA HANDICAP, six find a-half furlongs. Paper Note .. 9 0 Courtyard ..81 Metal Bird .. 8 6 Royal Amphora 7 9 Arrowrose 8 6 Haulbowline 7 6 Cranford .. 8 6 Card Player 7 3

Royal Amphora and Courtyard look the pick o£ the six horses in the Paroa Handicap field, who raced at Hokitika, but Paper Note, a fresh horse, who won at her last start, at Hororata, beating Dictate by. a head, with Wine Card a length away third, and Rebel Chief, Pelmet and Invoice amongst the “also rans,” looks the logical favourite. Metal Bird, Haulbowline, Arrowrose and Card Player did not race well enough at Hokitika to suggest their winning here. The aged Cranford has not been heard of this season, nor last season for that matter. Courtyard. ran a good second to Waitaka at Hokitika, after being in the leading division all the way. Royal Amphora won decisively 'at Hokitika, and the extra half furlong should not trouble thia veteran. Form points to: PAPER NOTE ROYAL AMPHORA COURTYARD

Among the fourteen horses accepted for the second trot, Silver Letitia and Bridget Borough will be coupled. Bridget Borough has previously shown ability on the grass, and she looks the pick of the limit division. Kingussie Avon Avell at Westport on the second day, and should be best supported, of those off 12 yards. Little Gordon Sias raced- disappointingly for some time, and though Nahlin has no recent form of consequence, he has previously Avon at Oinoto, and paces Avell on this track. Travisque ran into a place at Westport. Playwright, uoav a good beginner, is a useful pacer over this journey, and will make matters interesting for those ahead of him. The favourites may be TRAVISQUE BRIDGET BOROUGH—SILVER LETITIA Bracket NAHLIN 4,35

Gold Label’s success at Hororata should make her a warm favourite for the Miners’ Hack. She is a speedy sprinter, and has previously Avon on the Coast. Guinea Fowl, Amount and Glenogil will all be watched with interest. Guinea Foavl is a Grigg Stakes winner, and Amount has shown a lot cf pace—a typical Paper Money. Gleno'gil is regarded as the best maiden prospect a.t Riccarton, and is by Colossus from Glenluce, the dam of Red Heckle. She has been entered for the principal race on Monday, and is regarded as a smart maiden. The best supported may be: GOLD LABEu GLENOGIL AMOUNT 5-15

Wine Card heads the list, of ten acceptors in the Brunner Handicap, and after her splendid victory at Hokitika, will again be fancied. Drink Up, Waitaka, Metal Bird, Golden Dart, Roy Bun, Potent and Courtyard will all.be suited by the distance, and the best form of this lot has been shown by ‘Drink Up and Waitaka, though Golden Dart got away badly at Hokitika, and

then went a good race. This should be a fine betting race, and with reservations in view of earlier running, it looks like: WINE CARD WAITAKA DRINK UP AT ELLERSLIE TO-MORROW-FIELDS AND PROSPECTS. The Canterbury Park Trotting' Club’s meeting to-morrow is creating the greatest interest and while several fields are below the average in numbers quality is well represented and > the meeting gives every promise of being the most successful in the history of the club. Only eight horsesi figure in the Canterbury Handicap, but it is almost a New Zealand. Cup field and some of the best pacers will' stage a battle royal. Mile saddle races for some reason or other do not fill particularly well, but many racegoers regard these events as the best on the programme. In the Railway Handicap, Waipahi appears to hold much better prospects than the majority but Esplendor is. a pacer well above the average. That great trotter, Golden Eagle has been penalised 24 yards for her great win at Ashburton, and possibly the extra handicap may be top much for her. Frisco Lady, apparently was not suited by the -sloppy; going at Ashburton, and her turn may come in the Islington Handicap.

The first race Avill be started at 13 noon, and the club has decided . to start every race at the advertised time.

The win and place system of betting will be in operation and with the improved facilities the investments should slioaa’ a good increase on the total of £30,558 put through last year. The following horses should race well in their different engagements: Introductory Handicap: Native Huon, Esther, Axiom. Railway Handicap: Waipahi, Esplendor. Canterbury Handicap: Pot Luck, Cloudy Range, Gamble. Lyttelton Handicap: Lightning Lady, Labourman, Great Divide. Stewards’ Handicap: Captain Bolt, Flotsam, Little Reta. NOTES FROM EPSOM. WILLOW WAVE AGAIN. 4 [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] AUCKLAND, December 30. As a test of speed, the Champion Handicap at Epsom, to-day, was a misnomer. There were six starters, and four chances, Bonny Azure and King’s Warrior being bracketed, and also Tempest and Indianapolis. The issue, however, lay between Willow Wave, the Auckland Cup winner, and Lucky Jack, who led until the last few yards. Lucky Jack led out from King's Warrior, Willow Wave and Tempest, with a gap to Indianapolis and Bonny Azure, who went off very badly. The leader reached the quarter in 35 3-5, and the first half mile in 1.10 4-5. ,At the mile, Indianapolis had made up most of his handicap, and the field ran in Indian file at intervals of a length. Crossing the top, Indianapolis ran up to Lucky Jack, and before-they, entered the straight,. Willow Wave also joined the issue. In the last 100 yards it was evident that Willow Wave had the measure of Lucky Jack, and lie won by half a length. Indianapolis did not show his old dash in the last bit, and he was two lengths from Lucky Jack, while King’s Warrior, Tempest and Bonny Azure were at wide intervals. Fremont’s Short Price:

Having exposed his possibilities on the first day, Fremont was supported to a very short price for the Telegraph Handicap, and he led throughout, Aerial Bell being second over the latter stages. Jewel Crest paid a large place dividend, and is improved. Won Handsomely: Elissa won the Oak Trot handsomely from Biworthy, the favourite, Within, breaking badly and being pulled up. Mute Retu.rns:

. In the Epsom Trot, the second unhoppled event, Mute led all the way, returning to the winning list after a long absence. Kuini went fairly solidly for third, arid Smith appears to have her right again. Favourites Beaten:

Bold Venture was driven a fine race to win the Tramway Handicap, in which the favourites, Cavan Chief and Young Pointer, began the worst of the field. Young Pointer finished third, two and a. half lengths behind Adversity, who was beaten by a head, by Bold Venture. Made Amends:

| Two races later, in the Dominion Handicap, Young Pointer made amends, winning by half a. head in a stern finish with an outsider. Royal Jewel, with Ropata, who did not get the best of the running third. Rongomai Again: Rongomai won the Ranfurly Handicap for Mr G. J. Barton, who won on the first day with the same mare. Rongomai lay second' to Kewpie’s Bond until three furlongs from home, when she ran to the front, and led into the. straight from Kewpie’s Bond, Kenworthy, Gold Dredge, King’s Guide and Fernbrook Lass. Rongomai just stalled off Gold Dredge by a .head, with Kenworthy half a length away third, and then Fernbrook Lass J and King’s Guide together. IMPORTED FROM U.S.A. F. J. SMITH’S ENTERPRISE. [special to “stab.”] « AUCKLAND, December 31. Three young horses arrived from U.S.A, on Wednesday, to the order of the trotting trainer, F. J. Smith. They are novices, and although two-year-olds they rank as three-year-olds, according to New Zealand time. The horses are Josedale Grattan, Josedale Dictator, and Josedale Dawn. The last-named is a pacing, filly by Grattan McKinney from Flirtation. .Josedale Grattan is also a pacer by Grattan McKinney from Miss Beluin, and Josedale Director is a trotter by Peter Lincoln from Calumet Beado. Josedale Grattan was bought by Smith for Dr. M, G. Pezaro, and Mr E.

G. Bridgens. The horses, went into quarantine yesterday. GREY T.C. ACCEPTORS In the list of acceptances for the first day of the Greymoutb .Trotting Club meeting published yesterday, “Colonel Bogey’’ appeared as an acceptor in the Dash Handicap. This should have read “Colonel Axworthy.” WORTHY NEED INJURED The Hokitika-owned, Worthy Need, trained at Greymouth by D. A.
