AUCKLAND, December 29

The death has occurred of Professor Sir Algernon Phillips Withiel Thomas, K.C.M.G., Professor Emeritus of Auckland University College, aged 80

years.’ • , He was Knighted at the time of the Coronation, for his services to educa-

tion. He was one of the four foundation professors of Auckland University College in 1883, and had been Chairman, of the Grammar School Board since 1916. Recently, he attended fiva prize-giving ceremonies at the grammar schools, in two days. He stumbled on an uneven platform, and is believed to have injured his heart, in attempting to regain his foothold. In a tribute to Professor Thomas, this morning, Mr. Fraser said that he was one of the foremost figures in educational activities in the Dominion. The value of his work as a scientist was acknowledged far beyond the boundaries of Now Zealand. His work for the Auckland Grammar Scheels during what was considered as his “retirement years.” was ’a lasting monument to him as an educationalist. It was a source of satisfaction to all who knew him, and especially to the Government, when he was Knighted.
