AUCKLAND WOOL CHEQUE

AUCKLAND, December 10. A sum estimated to be 1 , about £157,000 will go into circulation to growers in the Auckland Province of the first of the new season’s wool cheques on account of the Auckland sale held on November 27. This compares with £439 270 obtained at the opening auction’last year, and £240,154 at the corresponding fixture in 1935. „ At the time of the auction it was estimated that there had been a clearance of only about 30 per cent However, a number of growers sold latei by private treaty, and it is now expected that the final figures will show a clearance os about 45 per cent. From preliminary calculations the average price a bale shQ" be about £l4. This compares with £2O/10/b a bale received for the first sale last season, and £l2/2/- a bale for the November fixture in 1935. The figure tor last year was exceptional, being the highest since £22/11/- was recorded in'l92B.

BRITISH BANK ADVANCES

LONDON, December 9. _ A healthy feature of the country’s finances is the steady rise ovei the last year in the total of bank advances —an improvement which the last monthly statement of the London clearing banks shows is continuing. At £986,210,000, the November average of advances of the 11 Lo P^° n clearing banks- compares 224,000 a year ago. In 1929 tne £1 000,000,000 mark was passed, but m the final quarter of 1933, advances hact dropped to well below £750,000,000.

BIG RIVER GOLD MINES.

Report for the wieek ending December 9, 1937: — No. 4 Level Centre Stope: South of the Winze this stope was, carried along 18 feet on stone about one foot wide and which appears to be widening overhead. South Block Stope: This has been filled! with mullock broken out from a cross-cut north.. of the centre winze. Am now getting ready to break out stone in Stope working north from the winze. No 5 level, South Block Winze: Timbered for. 8 feet and sunk Ift 6in to 20ft 6in on 3 feet of good grade stone showing in the north end. No.'s Level, South Block Stope: Working south on. a face of stone about 8 feet wide. Centre stope: Taken out two blocks of stone which ran into the hanging wall for about 6 feet and mullocked up south end of stope. North Drive: ThiS' was advanced 9 feet through reef track carrying a few boulders of stone. We have now passed through three blocks of stone in this drive. The first is about 12 feet long and 2 feet wide and fair grade stone. The second is 29 feet long and averages about 3ft 6in wide overhead and 4 feet on the bottom and! the! third! isi 28 feet long and over. 4 feet in width of good, grade stone. "83 tons of sitone were delivered to the surface bins.
