HOKITIKA, December 10
The ’Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. H. L. Michel. R. Elcock, E. L. Park, T. W. Duff, E. Teichelmann, G. Heinz. Apologies were received from Crs. H. T. Parry and H. A. Thompson.
The financial statement, showed receipts £530/1/4 and expenditure £'so7/9/4. Accounts amounting to £9B’6/0/2 were passed for payment. The Abattoir Department reported stock slaughtered for the month of October amounted to 17 cows, 21 heifers, 73 bullocks, 3 calves, 223 sheep, 5 pigs; condemned, one bullock. Pees collected for November amounted to £5B/16/6. Fees for the corresponding month last year amounted to £6l/13/-. The Abattoirs’ report for November show’ed stock slaughtered for month amounted to 28 cows, 37 heifers, 58 bullocks, 2 calves, 276 sheep, 9 lambs, 13 pigs; condemned, 2 sheep. Fees collected for month amounted to £69 1/-. Fees for corresponding month last year £59/15/6.
CORRESPONDENCE. From the Municipal Association, Wellington, asking that any comments in regard to the standardisation of hides be forwarded to the Association to be dealt with, by its representative on the New Zealand Standards Institute. —'town Clerk to attend to. From J. V. Conning, Abattoirs, application for an increase in wages.— Increased to £2/10/- per week. From the ' Associated Motorists’ Petrol Co., Ltd., Greymouth, forwarding approval of the Bureau of Industry for the erection of an electric kerbside petrol pump at premises in Hampden Street, and asking the Council’s permission to instal. — Granted, subject to usual conditions. From the Manager of the Hokitika Savings Bank, advising that the trustees are prepared' to sell to the Council a moiety of section 55, approximately 12ft wide,, along the southern boundary of the section (area 4 perches) for £3O, and stating that the whole of the land could be acquired at a lesser cost than the existing Government valuation. —Decided to purchase 12ft strip for £3O. From C. H. W.. Wells, application for consent to subdivide Lot 1 of D.P. 830, part sections 1293 arid 1294, so that each moiety will contain 18.7 perches.—Granted.
From the Business Manager, N.Z.R. Road Services, Hokitika, detailing the various fees payable in respect of four kerbside petrol pufnps and asking the Council to consider a reduction in the usual license ' fee of each pump.—Fees to be £3 per pump. From the N.Z. Refrigerating Co., forwarding particulars of meat delivered' into Hokitika during November, 1937, viz: 118 sheep, 10 lambs, 1 Pig- . ; From J. P. Hagar and other resi- . dents, Lower Livingstone Streeet, , drawing- attention to the growth of . blackberries and gorse in that area ; between Weld and Stafford Streets, and asking that the mater be given at- ( tention.—Referred to the Works Committee. ' Front the Commissioner of Transport advising that the law providing , for the. 30 miles per hour limit in 1 boroughs also empowers the Hon. ’Minister to exclude any road or street from the speed limit, and that this is intended to be applied where there is no great extent of built-up area and where it would consequently not be ’reasonable for the speed limit to be enforced, and further that it is considered that the tollowing sections ot the State highway passing through Hokitika should be excluded from this restriction as to speed:—(l) At the northern end for a distance of 10 chains from the boundary to a point north of the junction with Cemetery (2) At the eastern end from the boundary to Livingstone Street, about 20 chains.—Council asks for restrictioris on these sections. From F. J. Groi\fsky, application to surrender lease granted under Section 8 (7) of the Public Bodies Leases Act, 1908, and’ to be granted a new lease under Section 5 (e) of the said Act for the unexpired balance ot the original term. —Surrender accepted and new lease granted. From the Secretary, Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade advising that the Fire. Brigade had fully considered the matter of an alternative site for the new fire station, but that they aie un animous in their desire to retain the present site for the station. From A. R. Elcock, agent for Mis E.-'E. Higgins, application to subdivide section part 3323 and' otheis (D.P. 221) Stafford Street. —Agreed. From Park, Murdoch and James, advising that in regard to the stopping of the street between the sections IS, 52, 48 and 16, Town of Hokitika, the' Magistrate had confirmed the decision of the electors that the street be stopped, and that a permanent record of the stopping had been made by the Cliiet Surveyor and accordingly the street is now stopped. Also asking that the Council, pursuant to section 194 (I) of the M.C. Act, 1933, appoint a competent valuer to value the portion of land now stepped in order that it may be transferred to Robert Ford and Co., Ltd., and Edward McDonnell, the owners of tiic adjoining sections.—M. Houston arid Co. appointed. From residents of Upper Revell Street, asking attention to drainage on eastern side of Revell Street be- . tween Hampden and Park Streets. — Mr Macfarlane to be instructed to go on with a survey and plans for proposed drainage. Authority was granted the Town Cffirk to pay all wages to end of December before Christmas as usual; also to close. Borough offices from December 24 to January 3. It was decided to prosecute all persons caught depositing rubbish on rhe beach.
