LIQUOR AT RACES
NO WOMEN AT BOOTHS. [FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, December 9. Women’s privileges in obtaining lefreshment at licensed booths at the race meetings of the Forbury Park Trotting Club were discussed at a meeting o the club executive to-night, when advice was received that the Dunedin Licensing Committee had ta J.®3 ® teps enforce the condition prohibiting the supply Of liquor to women and thenpresence in licensed booths. It was decided to ask the Licensing Committee ito receive a deputation from the club. The solicitors for the licensee ot the booths at Forbury Park wrote advising that his application for a provisional licence for four booths had been refused, the licence being granted for three booths only. The licensee s attention had also been drawn to the condition of his licence prohibiting the supply of liquor to women and their presence in the booth. The licence had attached to it the condition “that no women were to be supplied with liquor from booths nor allowed therein.” As a prosecution would probably follow any breach of this condition, the club was asked to do everything possible,to assist the licensee. Mr. B. S. Irwin, the chairman, said the police had put in a report in which I it was stated that adequate provision was already made for women without the addition of a fourth booth for their special use. The chairman of the Licensing Committee had not been aware that women were supplied with liquor and had been incensed at the police for winking at it.
Dr. D. C. Jolly: Does the Licensing Committee know that we are being made the laughing stock of New Zealand? The enforcement of these conditions is creating an absurd position.
