RAID ON CLUB
MEN AND WOMEN FINED
[per- press association.]
AUCKLAND, December 10
Of the 44 men and women found on premises known as the Ixion Club, when it was raided on October 15, 39, including nine women, mostly young, appeared before Mr. Orr Walker, S.M., to-day, charged with being found illegally on premises -Which the police alleged were used for the selling of sly-grog, and as a gaming-house. Sub-Inspector Fox said that the occupier had already been dealt with. He reminded Mr. Walker that other Magistrates had fined a number of the persons previously before the Court —men £2 and women £1 each. Mr. Walker said that the maximum penalty was £2. “In fact,” he added, “it was fixed at that about 60 years ago, when, money was worth two or three times what it is now, so that the cost of sinning has not gone up. However, the equality of the sexes is passing away, and I think we will have to consider that now.”
Two men, who pleaded not guilty, were allowed to go. In the other cases, the men were fined £2, and the women £1 each.
