Mrs. G. W. Driscoll, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. J. B. Paton, left this morning, on return to Wellington.

A London cablegram stated that an Exhibition Scholarship had been awarded to a New Zealander, I. Lauder, for research in physical chemistry, at Manchester.

. A Newport cablegram announced the death of Navigating Officer’ McPhee, of the yacht Endeavour (the challenger for the America’s Cup). He underwent an operation on June 29 for gastric ulcers.

Earl Baldwin will leave London for a short rest in the country before going to Aix-les-Bains. He will not consider any future engagements until after his return late in the autumn. —Official Wireless.

Miss F. Thomson, who has resigned from Richmond and Reynolds Ltd., after ten years’ service, was yesterday, presented by the principals and staff with an electric crystal lamp, as a token of appreciation of her services, and of the esteem in which she is held.

Dr. Alvin W. de Berry, elder son of Mr. L. F. de Berry, arrived in Auckland yesterday from America. Dr. de Berry is a graduate of the University of Otago and the holder of a dental scholarship at North-Western University, Chicago, where he has graduated Doctor of Dental Surgery.

The death has occurred at Hastings of Mr Alexander Dawson, aged 58. Mr Dawson joined the Post ami Telegraph Department as a youth, and served in various post offices in the Dominion, ultimately becoming chief postmaster at Wanganui. He retired' five years ago. Mr Dawson is- survived by a widow and two young sons.—Press Assn.

The death occurred at Auckland, this week, of Mr. G. E. W. Seale, who was well-known in gold-mining circles on the West Coast. He -was actively engaged in mining thirty years ago and later, in Otago, discovered the King Solomon mine. He returned to the West Coast some years ago and was engaged in boring and prospecting until recently. He is survived by his wife and one son, Harold, of Greymouth.
