July 17 —Waimate Hunt. July 24 —Rangitikei Hunt. July 24—South Canterbury Hunt. July 29, 31 —Poverty Bay. July 31 —Christchurch Hunt. August 10, 12, 14—Canterbury.

Brackets at Waipa: Brackets at the Waipa meeting tomorrow, include: Park Steeples: Erination and Master Mush; Valpai and Illuminagh. Arapuni Handicap: Gay Seton and Gay Sister. For T rentham:

W. J. Wood’s pair for flat events at the Wellington Meeting next month, Arctic King and Myriam, will both be ridden Try S. Wilson. P. Burgess has been engaged to take the mounts on Korero and Southern Blood.

Riding at Waipa: Riding engagements for Waipa are: B. Sullivan, Erination, Chang; N. R. McKenzie, Stormy Weather, Enge; J. Muir, Kinkle, Windsor Lad, Boughal; O. Mclnally, Sunny Downs. Johnny Walls, Mangakowhai. Divisions at Ashburton:

In the event of the starters in the maiden race at Ashburton to-morrow exceeding 16, the race will be run in two divisions. The following will comprise the second division: —Almira, Prince Flaneur, Combat, Banker’s Choice, Pol Roger, Doctoi’ Duthie, Last Post, Solpit, Happy Knight.

Surprising Omission: A rather surprising omission from the steeplechase events at the Wellington meeting is Clarion Call, but the Hunting Song gelding is in the big hurdles, and apparently his connections are going to wait a little longer before tackling the big cross-country events in earnest.

Rider for Metal Bird: J. W. Jennings will be on the West Coaster, Metal Bird in the Maronan Handicap at Ashburton to-morrow. The race the Weathervane gelding had at Omoto last Saturday, when he ran third over six and a-half furlongs to Primak and Monipere, would do him good, and he will carry a lot of West Coast support to-morrow, when he will be racing over his pet distance. Riders at Ashburton:

The following riding engagements have been announced for Ashburton to-morrow: —A. E. Ellis, Aggravate; Miracle. Cape Gabo, Queen Dorothy; L. J. Ellis, Salient Knight, Cocksure, Nolana, Dictate; R. Brough-, ton, Trackman and Glenthawn; G. R. Tattersail, Stargono, Marjory Daw, and Master Hector; Mr E. Symes, Valroy; S. Wilson, Girl Pat, Gladium, Iddo; W. Doyle, Gabriel: S. R. Farland, First Hand. Gabriel is a three-year-old by Mullaboden—Rachel, dam of Rabbi and Kozan.

Novices at Barrier: An interesting episode in the work at Trentham on Wednesday was the lining up of inexperienced horses at the barrier. T. R. George made an excellent starter. George gave four of his own horses practice together. They were the rising two-year-old Peerless (Beau Pere—Prestige) and the rising three-year-olds Trebor (Spear Dance—Sports Queen), Hineratfe (Robespierre—Oratrix), and the’ Intruder—Podgy gelding. Except that Peerless was a trifle slow, they jumped away splendidly. Later on the rising two-year-old Beauly (Hunting Song—Dodo) and the rising three-year-old Ronda.le (Black Ronald— Lucidity) were lined up, and they also began smartly, though Rondale, who was having his first experience, seemed a little puzzled about what was required from him.

RICCARTON NOTES.

[special to “star.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, June 25. Fast work was not practicable at Riccarton on Wednesday or again yesterday owing to incessant rain, which has left, the tracks in a sloppy condition. The majority of horses in training have Jiad therefore to bo exercised on the roads, and those engaged at Ashburton will not have had the benefit of a winding up gallop. On the. other hand, all horses have had some solid work extending without interruption over several weeks, and the compulsory let-up will not have a very seriou's effect. It is interesting to relate that five horses arrived at Riccarton last week from Invercargill, owing to the con-

tinned sodden state of the Southland Club’s track, and conditions have been * bad since they arrived. The same applies to th.; Greyniouth team brought over by E. Kingan, who is likely to remain at. Riccarton for some time provided his horses shape satisfactorily. It is not. often that, the Riccarton tracks are put. out. of commission, and when this happens, the duration of idleness is usually limited to one or two days, as the ground dries off very quickly, and one day's sun and breeze is usually sufficient to put matters back Almost to normal. Hunting Go. Signaller and Golden Lap will remain at Riccarton until after the Grand National meeting. They have been nominated for the Wellington meeting, and Metal Bird is also in the list for sprint races. Arnelita has been sent up from Invercargill by F. W. Ellis to his brother A. S. Ellis, also to remain at Riccarton until after the August gathering. She has been a very unlucky mare for some time past, ami it is hoped the change of tracks and environment will have a beneficial effect.

ASHBURTON CANDIDATES.

[SPECIAL TO “STAB.”]

CHRISTCHURCH. June 25

E. Kingan arrived at Riccarton, this morning, from Grey mouth, bringing Carfex, Metal Bird and Gold Boy who are to race at Ashburton; also Arrowrose. He will stay here for a few months, probably till after the early Spring meetings. J. Johnston also arrived to-day, with Potent, who is in two races ton.

The tracks were very heavy this morning, but as the horse's were unable to work yesterday, most of the candidates for Ashburton were given useful sprints. Hunting Go, with Beach Banner as a mate, jumped five fences well. Palmyra and Forum are unlikely to start at Ashburton. The weather continues to be cold, with frequent showers of rain this morning. ASHBURTON RACES. TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, June 25. Prospects to-day do not look very bright for tlie Ashburton County Racing Club’s winter fixture to-morrow. Even if the weather should break fine, the track is certain to be holding, although it does not get heavy as in other places owing to its .sandy formation and good drainage. The win' and place system will be in operation. There will be six galloping and two trotting events, and a short review of each of the former may be of interest. The Hurdles:

There will be several newcomers to the jumping ranks in the' Hinds' Hurdles, and their efforts will be closely watched in view of later racing. Cottingham represents; the best form of the experienced brigade, and is entitled to be a strong favourite. Gold Knight has never regained any of his earlier good form, and Royal Amphora, although he has had some hurdling, is past his best. Cottingham will therefore get- most opposition’ from novices, and the best of these may be Silver Sight and The Surgeon.

Juveniles Appeal: There are six two-year-olds engaged in the Maiden Stakes for non-winners, and they can usually be looked to, to provide some of the placings. Happy Night, Cocksure, and Lockit (a brother to Miracle) have all shown pace, and it would not be surprising to find them fighting out. the finish. If they are to be beaten by members of the older brigade, Aggravate, Combat and Prince Flaneur may be. most dangerous.

Salient Knight Again: Tire Mayfield Hack Handicap, a middle distance event, can always, be depended upon to provide a most interesting race. Dictate will be. reserved for his open 'engagement, and 1 Potent may also be kept for his' ■shorter race. Recent form’ is strongly represented by. Cape Gabo, Salient Knight, Silver Slipper, Maroha, and Hanlon, and Investors may vote for Salient Knight, Cape Gabo and Silver Slipper. Cross Country Event: Most of those carded: for the Droniore Hack Steeplechase have already attracted notice without emerging from the hack class. Sky Pilot was nominated for this event, but at the time, he was ineligible owing to winning £4OO at the Auckland winter meeting this month. . Streamline’s production will depend on the state of the track, but it is hoped to give him a race, as he will need experience for Trentham. He will be ridden by G. Ridgway, owing to an arrangement by which his former pilot, H. Turner, will continue to school the horse, and will receive losing or winning riding fees, as the case may be, for the rest of the season. Polydora will have the services of R. Beale, who steered her to victory in her only jumping success to date when she won a hurdle race at Riccarton last August. She should not be troubled by to-moiTow’s journey or fences, and if she cannot win or make a fight of it, she can very well be put into £he discard. HuUiting Go, who is now at Riccarton, and who showed every disinclination to face, a big fence last week, would probably be all the better for a spell away from the game for a while. Arctic Star and Spearmarch are two of D. O’Connor’s young pupils, and both shape as if they will be useful stake earners later in the winter. Burglar is a plodder, and as such is liable to gain a place. Gay Boa won at Wingatui, and has to be kept in view from a jumpingpoint of view. The issue appears, likely to be confined to those mentioned, and the public may show most confidence in Streamline, Polydora and Gay Boa. The Hack Six:

Several smart hack sprinters will parade for the Moreton Handicap, and the issue must be considered very open. Miracle represents the best form of late, but. a soft, track will be against him. Then there are Rebel Mate. Nolana, Gay Lyric and Roy Bun, who have all raced prominently, while Colombo. Sir Hugh and Palmyra have previously shown their ability. There should be a close struggle over the final stages, and the finish may be confined to Palmyra. Nolana and Miracle. An Attractive Card:

The field for the open event, the Maronan Handicap, is the most, attractive carded for it. for many years, and all acceptors promise to go to the post. Form points to the prospects of Greek Gold. Queen Dorothy and Dictate.

Trotting Events: A good deal of interest will be taken in the trotting events at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow. for the opportunity will be about, the last offered to owners in the South Island. While the majority have still to ger. on the winning list, several have shown very promising form, and are expected to do still bettor in the new season.

The field for the Lyndhurst Handicap will include a number of youngpacers of moro than average merit, and form points to Jackaranda who ran second to Twos Loose in the Timaru Nursery Stakes, and ran a very creditable race in the Sapling Slakes a! Ashburton, lie is a pacer of distinct possibilities and likely Io reach good class. Policy who has yet to win a race, showed' promising form at the Hororata meeting, when ho finished second to Heather Queen, after pacing a mile and a half in 3.25 2-5. This form, if reproduced, should bp good enough to win from a 3.43 mark.

Santa Fe from the Duirbar Lodge stable, is credited with possessing plenty of speed which has not been produced in public. Better form may •be expected. Glen Travis is also a fancied candidate, and there may be support for Chieftainess, a winner at Greymouth last Saturday, Chaise and Loyal Pat. The favourite, however, may be Jackaranda. The Winchmore Handicap capers in the main for horses that have won a race, and are on their way to better company. Bill Grattan is a very speedy pacer, and a tenacious finisher, and from R. J. Humphrey’s stable is entitled to respect. He is the makings of a good solid pacer. Karoro lias raced solidly and the two-year-old Parauri is a pacer with prospects. At the recent Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting Wynan won well over a mile ■and a half, and possibly he will be quite at home in the field he is now set to meet. The favourites will probably be Bill Grattan and Wynan.

Leslie Fraser, senior A..J.C. steward, said Mala appeared a little fretful, was sweating a little more than usual, and did not appear to be in his usual condition prior to the start of the Derby, but witness did not. notice any soreness o.r lameness.
