OLDEST CATHOLIC CHURCH

ST. JOSEPH'S. LYTTELTON. [per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH. June 23. The centenary of the (fatholic Church in New Zealand will be celebrated in Auckland next February. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lyttelton is the oldest Catholic church in. the Dominion. In 1564 Sir Frederick Weld, a devout Catholic and at. that time Premier of New Zealand, gave a site in Winchester Street for the erection of a church. Plans and specifications were drawn lip by Messrs. Mountfort and Bury, and the foundation stone of the church was laid on February 2. 1565. The church was dedicated and opened for public worship on June 29 the same year. Other churches were erected in New Zealand before. 1865. but, with the passing of the years, they have been demolished or devoted to other uses.

St. Joseph's Church to-day is substantially the same building as it was 72 years ago when that saintly old French missionary. Father Chataingner. S.M.. said Mass within its walls for the. first time. This historical event will be commemorated by a tri- 1 duum, or throe days’ prayer, beginning next Sunday evening. The anniversay sermon will be preached on Monday evening by the Very Rev. Dr. J. Kennedy, of Christchurch.
