ROYAL GOWNS AT AUCTION
BELONGED TO QUEEN ALEXANDRA NEW YORK. May 8. Court gowns, slippers and other objects from the personal wardrobe of Queen Alexandra were sold at one of New York’s best-known auction rooms for a total of £520. The prices were low, and the buyers .were chiefly women, some representing museums. A black velvet riding coat and hat brought £.9, a State gown £lO, a Kashmir shawl, a present from the Maharaja of Kashmir, £7, a Danish wool driving coat £l2, a purple velvet Coronation robe worn by Princess Victoria at the Coronation of Edward VII., £72. The State gown was that worn by Queen Alexandra at many ceremonies at Buckingham Palace. Another item was a white leather and gold jewel box described in the catalogue as presented to her Majesty by the ladies of Leeds. It was sold for £7. The gowns were sold by Mr. Samuel Soden, a British fur dealer, who brought them here a few weeks ago for exhibition purposes. On his arrival, however, instead of being able to import the gowns under bond as he had expected, lie was compelled to pay dut" and therefore decided to sell them to recoup himself.
